I'm due to sign on at my local office next Wednesday but it's a snow covered hike from here at the moment and given the weather that's expected over the weekend I might not be able to make it in.

Tried to ring but can't get through, what will happen if I don't get there?

From the Department of Social Welfare and Family Affairs website

    Press Release 6/01/2010
"...Some jobseekers were also unable to attend their Social Welfare Local Office today to sign on as normal, due to severe weather and difficult travel conditions. Customers affected are being advised to call to their local office at the earliest opportunity once conditions improve."

Just explain re roads, they'll understand.

  • I was just wondering about this myself. Signing on here in Limerick was cancelled in November as a mark of respect to a employee who passed away. I've just heard there will be more snow over the weekend. I had a stress fracture in my foot in December so if I have a fall it could be seriously damaged. Am I right that the press release means if things are bad on Tuesday I can go in as soon as I deem it safe to do so?

I'd ring them first thing on Monday to ask them - Limerick hasn't beentoo badly affected by the weather so far.

I've tried ringing three times this morning but no one is answering which is very unusual for them  Maybe it's closed because of the weather?

:D I was thinking of doing the same. You'll be alright but normally you'd still probably get a few dirty looks from whoever is on.

I had the same problem as you I didn't make it in to the social welfare office cos my road was basically like a sheet of ice. So I rang this morning and they said it was Fine said I was excused from signing on cos of the bad weather. Just took my name and pps number. Hope this helps.

I was scheduled to sign on today as per a letter received way before Christmas. While at the counter I heard one of the women saying that they're accepting people who were supposed to be in on Monday or Tuesday due to the weather.
