Long Johns?

So with all this cold weather, are you keeping yourself warmer with an extra layer of clothing around the legs?

Here in Finland, it's standard that all guys will were longjohns in winter. Is it something that you think that only your greatgrandfather might have worn and think, "I rather freeze to death than wear those things"?

I wear them in winter, do you?

Do you or would you consider wearing longjohns to keep out the cold? 91 votes

After my first trip to Norway in winter, I always wear sking 'long johns'. I prefer the Norwegian term 'super underwear'.

I've been wearing mine for the last 3 days. Nice and toasty for my whopping 8 minute walk from the Luas to my office.

I'm sure Long John Silver might have a few pairs for me to wear, but I don't wear long johns or anything that people would wear to keep the cold out.

I came home for Xmas from Boston and Santa brought me a pair of Long Johns as a joke...i'm going to American Football game on Sunday sitting for 3 hours in highs of -8C for the day...i will most certainly be wearing long johns for the 1st time.

As a long john newbie who lacks the appropriate experience in wearing long johns, i have a question that hopefully a well experienced long john wearer will be able to answer...Do you wear boxers inside or outside your long johns? or do you wear underwear at all? Its so confusing, i dont want to make a fool out of myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

boxers inside. Otherwise you can't really wear your long johns more than once before a wash needed -not very practical.

I tried to buy one pair of Long Johns but they only come in pieces of eight.

Bought a pair at the start of December and got slagged for it. I have been the only person not moaning about the cold when out walking around with friends. **** style, its cold out.

I just wear them as my underwear. but if you were to wear boxers I'd wear them inside to stop the skidmarks getting on your new long johns.

I climb bloody mountains for college, I've paid over €100 for my thermal base layer, bloody right I wear them all the time when it's cold!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,239 ✭✭✭✭WindSock

They are great! Thermals too. However when himself wears them, I tell him not to bother trying to be sexy in them. It just aint gonna work :pac:

Irish men are now turning into women....it's not that cold that your usual winter clothes won't suffice. You would swear it was minus 40 and not minus 4 to see some lads walking around....you need to harden the fcuk up!!

I wore them underneath a pirate costume once and before me and the missus went out we had crazy pirate sex with me in my long johns and a ruffled shirt. You can be a sexy man in long johns.

    I know, TMI.

    Not sure about cheap ones.
Great Outdoors sell loads of different types, for both winter and summer activities, most of the things you find there will more than likely be overkill.

Millets in the square, Tallaght, has been having a closing down sail for bloody ages. Not sure if they're closed yet though. If they're open you should be able to get really nice pair with out the big price.

Even a shítty pair of thermals is better than a crap load of tshirts/tracky bottoms.

PROTIP: Keep your core warm and the rest of you won't get cold, fingers wont go numb, ect...
Don't wear to many tshirts, you'll only end up sweating as they're not breathable. As soon as you stop moving the sweat will get very cold and so will you. It will be terrible.
A good pair of thermals will keep you warm and breath/release any excess heat and sweat.

Aldi/Lidl some times have deals on these sorts of things. Not great for the mountains but you'll notice a world of different just leggin' it around town or the likes of that.

    SORT EM OUT!

    Long Johns are awful.

Men where I live in Cork wear them all year round. In fact, they wear the same one all year round.

My mum is a nurse and often, when male patients are admitted, they actually have to cut the Long Johns off them to get them off.

    Ughhh
    :(

I got a pair this year, and I'm reluctant to take them off. They are fantastic for about the house, and they add a lovely layer of 'closeness' under your jeans.

I will be buying a 2nd pair soon so I can operate a wear one/wash one policy.

    I'm a devotee myself.

Especially playing golf. Only problem is the yellow staining around the cluster area, like someone dipped the fcukers into a can of Fanta orange.

    Any tips for shifting that??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,507 ✭✭✭DamienH

Vests for me anyway, they're the only job.

I've worn running tights under jeans or tracksuit bottoms a couple of times when out, I also wore ski socks on a few colder days.

I work outside so have several pairs.....but I am a girl.
Been wearing them throughout the cold spell (not the same pair mind)
I wear knickers under them so they'll do a couple of days wear.

I've been working up near the sally gap all week...carrying sheets of insulated plasterboard into a new build house then fixing them to the walls and ceilings.
Snow has drifted up to the windows and the sheep can barely be seen in the fields.
Have i found the need to wear long johns, gloves, hats etc...eh no...as i said the weather is cold not arctic cold, not russian cold, not siberian cold.
More people walking around with colds etc, cause they are stuck inside all day with the heating on full and then coming outside with 20 layers on...ffs grow a pair!!

Penney's do long johns, separate bottoms and tops. €4 each where can you go wrong! My bf was complaining about the cold so I went and bought some bottoms, he loves the warmth and I love the peace :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭Ann22

I asked my oh before if he'd wear them but he said no. He might now actually...His poor hands are splitting at the knuckles with the cold. I got him fingerless gloves but the stupid thumbs are still in them so he has to keep taking them off. Does anyone know where I can get proper mens' fingerless gloves?
I got myself leggings to wear to work inside my trousers 'cos it's a freezing cold damp horrible building. Warmer outside:(.
