A test for those living by the sea

Can anyone living by the sea do a test for me.

Can you go get a bucket of sea water this evening, throw it on a path and see if it freezes. Also, leave some in the bucket and see if it freezes.

I am trying to find out if the salt content is high enough to resist freezing and/or will it disolve frozen paths

with the water trying to freeze and the salt trying to melt it, im fairly sure it will just blow up.

I'm pretty sure if it does melt any of the water on the path the salt will get so diluted it will re-freeze in 20-30 minutes

What's your plan, once your armed with this knowledge?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,832 ✭✭✭CountingCrows

Pour a cup of water over a slug, if it dissolves immediately question answered and time saved.

Salt gets left behind when sea water freezes

Well considering I was in Kerry there last week and I saw the sea frozen over in places I doubt it would work!

temperature is the point... the arctic ice cap is a lot colder than we are experiencing so it will freeze and we are not experiencing tghat sort of cold.

All sea water will freeze at a certain temp

Sea water freezes at about -2 degrees celcius.

So if the temperature is lower than that, the water will still freeze.

That would be the best source for the test actually. When sea water freezes the remaining water is left with a higher salt content.

    Own a kettle?

I live near the sea.. there's iceberg like structures forming when the tide is out so the salt doesn't make a huge difference

    to clear your driveway??

ye mine just happens to hold about 20 gallons..

Hot water freezes a lot faster than cold water.

A bucket of boiling water will freeze before a bucket of cold water - were you home schooled?

Humans can't drink salt water because the kidneys can only make urine that is less salty than salt water. Therefore, to get rid of all the excess salt taken in by drinking salt water, you have to urinate more water than you drank, so you die of dehydration.

Get two trays of water; One cold, one boiling. Place them both in the freezer (or outside, I guess) and see which freezes first. Science says Boiling water will.

Also, the fun way of doing it.
    Though, you do need -40c...

    Instant snow. :D

OP this test can be done at home. Look up the average concentration of salt in sea water.

According to Wikipedia, it's 3.5% salt on average. 96.5% of the rest is water. So if you get 35 grams of salt and 965ml of water, mix them together and you have...salt water!!!

You can then do it yourself.

You've must have a magic freezer if the boiling water boils first!!

Yeah but we have to make sure we salt everything we eat and drink as little water as possible.

And then we'll all die of heart attacks.
