Motorists are being advised to drive only on left-hand lanes of icy dual carriageways, as councils run out of salt to treat the roads.

An additional four thousand tonnes from Limerick is due to be distributed across the country - but it will not be enough as the cold snap continues.

Councils and the NRA could soon to forced to decide on which roads to keep open and which to close.

4 thousand tonnes of salt.. that seems like more than enough. They must really use a lot of salt when "salting" the roads. I feel like washing my car when I go home, getting rid of all this salt if they are putting that much on the roads.
