Motorists advised to drive on left lane of dual carriageways
    08/01/2010 - 10:37:34

Motorists are being advised to drive only on left-hand lanes of icy dual carriageways, as councils run out of salt to treat the roads.

An additional four thousand tonnes from Limerick is due to be distributed across the country - but it will not be enough as the cold snap continues.

Councils and the NRA could soon to forced to decide on which roads to keep open and which to close.

Driving in the left lane will be a new experience for many Irish drivers!

" left lane of dual carriageways"

A lot of the dual carriage ways are already down to one lane, only madmen would try to over take....which means that there are plenty willing to try it!

So they're advising people to do what they should be doing anyway!

    Gotta love this country.

He started his first I thought

    Don't mind anyway.

Past few days it's been almost impossible to use the overtaking lane anyway. I find the hardest part is getting in and out of it. The line between the two lanes tends to have lots of snow and ice so usually it takes me a few 100 meters to get back into lane.

Hasn't stopped plenty of people on the N/M7 and the old dual carriageway between Naas and Newbridge :D

What about the BMW lane? :p:p

Surely they mean the slow lane? Wasn't it the NRA spokesperson last week who referred to the fast lane?

Driving in to work this morning on the inside lane of the dual carriageway. The outside lane was in a very bad condition and nobody was using it.
An utter muppet joined the dualer and as I braked (VERY) gently to give her room to join .... yes, she then braked.....

So I accelerated to go past her before she moved out of the merging lane ..... then she accelerated... before braking and pulling into my lane right in front of me ..... forcing me to brake again, this time quite hard.

Gave her a gentle tap of the horn and was met with a tirade of abuse with her gesticulating and indicating I should have moved out into the frozen outside lane so she could crawl onto the dual carriageway and then travel at 30kmph.

They want us to drive in the left lane? What, with all the poor people?

They should have just gritted the right lane and leave the left lane covered in snow. They wouldn't have to advertise anything then! 80% of people would notice nothing different, and the remaining 20% of normal left lane users would just use their cop and move to the right one!

Surely you should have changed it to read "fast lane"

Sort of, but I guess after a while the German luxury car lane can have more grip since there is no compacted snow or less of it.

The left most lane travelling south on the M50 from Blanch was lethal over the weekend, huge piles of frozen snow and ice, especially just before on ramps.
