Build ~ €1500

    Hi guys,

This will be my first build for over 10 years, so please forgive me if absolutely nothing goes with everything else. The build will mostly be used for both gaming and programming.

The monitor I have I mind is this one as has been recommended by my fellow boardsies. :)

That leaves me with about €1320 but can stretch it to €1400 or a bit more if need be. This is what I have in mind. Just want to make sure that everything will work with everything else and so forth.

    Thanks guys. :)

The Samsung F3 1tb are considered the fastest 7200 drives at the mo.. only about 75 euro too.

Have you thought about an SSD? once you use a system, any system with a half decent SSD you just can't go back to using 'ordinary' PC's.. stuff just loads almost instantly..

Unless you really need the 920 and the hyperthreading.. then you could go
    i5 750
    4 gig ram
    5850
    650w or even 550w PSU

You could really save a few hundred.

Are you planning on overclocking the 920 by much ?

Hi, thanks for the quick reply.

I have considered an SSD yes for the OS. Would something like this do the job?

I have €1500+ to spend on a computer for my PhD, and if I don't spend it all I don't cashback or anything, so I might as well spend every penny. :)

Is there anything else wrong with the setup? Will that ram work that board etc.? It's been a while... :o

I'm still debating whether I'm going to overclock it actually. Right now I'm leaning towards doing it a bit but not much...

I would get the 5850 over the 5870. The extra €100 you save is not worth the extra few % in speed u get from the 5870.

Like one poster said maybe go i5 if your not going to use the full power of the i7.

Have same Case, MB and CPU as u have listed in my gaming build or another one of my computers, and they are a good choice.

Last point, if u went i5 + 5850 you could use the extra money on ssd/Sound card/ Headset/headphones or speakers.

If you go i5 and 5850 seriously consider an SSD. You'll only be installing your OS and a few programs on it, but it makes every day use awesome. Best out there atm is the Intel X25-M Genertaion 2(white model). The 80gb is where it's at unless you got like €400 for the 160GB model :D

Don't go with the i5-750. Its a fairly decent chip, but a bit limited in certain areas. Personally i quite like your build, but i would change a few things.

Firstly drop the 920 and get a 860 (This cpu is quicker then the 920 in 80% of applications/games, it also overclocks to 4ghz on stock voltage)
The X58 motherboards are nice, but overkill in 90% of the situations, drop from the 1366 socket to the 1156 (you will need to do this for the cpu anyway) and get a nice P55 motherboard. There really is no need for more then 4gb of ram these days so stick with 4 gigs of 1300mhz or 1600mhz ram. Also the Samsung F2 HDDS are fine, but dog slow, they really are meant for low power machines which wont have to much hdd access. As for the graphics card, you can keep what you have, its a fine card, i know as i have two of them. But the 5850 will handle any game on that screen with no issues and free up money for a nice x-fi soundcard, headphones or speakers. Or possibly a second monitor.

It's been said already...But if your not going to use the full power of the i7 don't waste your money... most people are just getting them and not using it's power...

SSD seems like a good idea if you can get one, or maybe get a SSD and one of the Samsung HDD's which are meant to be amazing.

Thanks guys for all your help. :) After spending all day deliberating I've come up with the following rig. I also plan to get both a sound card and an ssd drive soon. Any opinions on the below?

That cooler will not mount on LGA 1156. And how come you've opted for an LG monitor over the Dell? I have that monitor(came on wednsday :)) and it's stunning.

Well spotted. The above with this cooler instead so.

As for the monitor, I was thrown off by the tn display being discussed here. Also it would be handy if I could buy everything from the one place.

The LG you've picked is no different I'm afraid. It's a TN Panel also. As are the majority of the monitors out there. I think I'm right in saysing that Toy won't find a good alternativ(non-TN) for less than €300 nd even at that you may only be getting a 22".

Thanks for that, didn't notice. Guess I'll get the dell monitor so and spend the extra on a sound card...

I think the LG u linked is also a TN. Most monitors are TN u have to spend a good bit more to get the better monitors.

Here is another monitor i like
    http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=ie&l=en&s=dhs&cs=iedhs1&sku=294345

    If i had the money i would get 2 ST2410 & 1 P2310H... oh i can dream.

Edit : Jock got their before me :( spent to much time trying to figure out why u wanted the LG over the dell. Had me thinking it was more then a TN :)

The LG "-PF" screens are pretty bad, but the specs of it are well above what the dell can do.
    Good buy imo.

OP the CPU cooler you picked aint that good for overclocking and I would suggest going for one of the modular corsair PSU's. Also the onboard sound from the Gigabyte mobo's is pretty damm sweet so maybe check it out first before dropping cash on a separate soundcard.

The specs are exact same. And the Dell comes in at 70euro less while it's on special, money that could be used to buy a decent sound card or speakers instead. Maybe even a comfy office chair :)

EDIT: LG states it has a 2ms respose time. Not worth extra 70 euro IMO. I'd much rather prefer to be sitting in a comfy chair than trying to spot the difference between 2 and 5 ms respose time.

2ms is grey to grey, but the brightness is what makes it much better.
10 degrees wider view angle horizontally.

Of course the dell would be 17 watts cheaper to run.

Down to preference, and if the small details are worth the 70 euro.
    Probably not to most people.
