Hi, not sure if this is the correct forum but does anybody know where I could get leather for leather working? Either in a bricks and mortar shop or online.
    Thanks.

Try this place on the Long Mile road. I got stuff there before. They sell full hides and I think they do stuff to measure as well.
    R J Mooney Tel :014564006.

Just as a matter of interest do you do much leathercraft and where do you source your tools?

    I use Crocodile Crafts a lot as they are the Irish distributor for the American company Tandy Leathercraft;
    http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/choosecountry/choosecountry.aspx

They are a small business and the person to contact is Joan.
The address is Rathnabo, Blessington, Co. Wicklow and the phone number is 045 865379.
I teach a variety of Craft subjects of which Leather is one and have been dealing with this company for 20 years and find them very helpful.
You will find Mooneys cheaper for just hides and leather but if you are looking for a one stop shop thats newbie friendly and has everything you should check them out. If you need more info on the subject you can PM me and I'll get back to you.

Hi Judas. Where do you teach crafts? I kind of half heartedly got in to leathercraft a few years ago, making a few belts and stuff but stopped as I have no space to work in. Unfortunately I'm still in the same situation so just curious really. Thanks

Hi, I teach craft subjects for the CDVEC in an early school leavers programme called Youth Reach. As I previously mentioned the leather work is just one of the modules that I teach but it is a very popular one especially around Christmas - making belts etc for presents!
As I tell my students, its a skill where you can learn the basics in an hour, become proficient in several hours and yet can take years to master, by that look at some of the work by the late great Al Stohlman.
Stohlmans books are in my opinion definitive on the subject and can be sourced through Tandy (see link above).
Anyway if I can be of more help, let me know.

I would love to give Leathercraft another go if only I had somewhere to work. Maybe in the future, fingers crossed.
I made a few belts myself for Christmas presents, it's a great way to give cheap gifts that you have put a bit of effort into yourself. Much more satisfying than something bought.
I've seen some of Stohlmans work in books and it really is amazing some of the stuff he created.
Thanks again for all the info. :D

Most leather craft projects start with a good pattern. If using a commercially available pattern, read the instructions, put the pieces together, and understand how everything will come together. Think the project through before taking the knife to a precious hide. Small mistakes can often be compensated for with clever adjustments, but it is best to respect the material by thinking ahead.

There's a guy called Peter in the leather shop on Harcourt Street you could talk to.

Or look on the crafts council website!

If anyone's looking for leathers by the way, I have some REALLY high quality stuff... i have it up on Adverts.ie. I'm not sure i'm allowed plug such things but here is the link if I am...

I have a textile design studio (The Brendan Joseph Studio), but I specialise in weaving by hand so I don't need the leathers, as lovely as they are!

Put up a link here no problem but keep all sales talk over on adverts - no blatant advertising of commercial enterprises though please.

Pm me, and I will send you my e mail address.

I will dig out , or find John Foleys address for you i the next day or 2.

I,m surprised that your job finished with Tutty's, as a close friend of mine , who is a 7th generation shoemaker, was approached by them to work there about 6 months ago.

I know celnet courses had to abandon their 2 week shoemaking course, as their instructor was no longer available. Maybe thats an option.

I also know there were a few guys here, myself included who were looking for a shoemaking course too. Maybe that might appeal to you.

Anyway stay in touch and pm me.

    Tim
