Hi I downloaded AGV Anti-Virus Free Edition. It seems to be working away well enough but is it enough? I'm sure there must be a catch.
    Anyone know anything about it?
    Thanks

The catch is its ranked in the bottom of the pile in independentant testing. Lets say there are three grades, AVG would be in the last. Its poor software and for the sake of 50 euro Id buy a proper one. Cause if something goes wrong it'll cost you a lot more than that.

Theres always a catch isnt there!!!!

Why, what doesn't it do that a proper one would?

A lot.. Look they dont charge 50 quid for the craic, you get what you pay for and when you pay for nothing....

Here is independant tested of all major antivirus products:

    http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/ondret/avc_report24.pdf

Now be aware, even though AVG scored in the second batch (not too bad you say) you dont have that package. Thats the paid up version 9.0 so as a free version you get even less protection and features so realistically the free version wouldnt be in the second tier...

By the way I dont sell antivirus myself but work with a brand which rates in the top table..

All of the popular AV's are not much different from each other in the fact all of them are far from perfect. These tests are bollocks, while they are nice to look are fundamentally flawed as they don't nor can test against all current malware or soon to be future crap.

Look for an AV that you like the feel of and that doesn't slow your computer to a crawl. My recommendations would be Avira for free or ESET paid.

    Jolsen,

I push ESET becuase of its minimal CPU and memory usage... But I still think those tests stand up...

Avira or the new Avast free are good.

They have to be good or nobody would bother buying the paid versions.

I moved away from AVG free to mircosoft security essentials.. And have had no problems and you wouldn't notice it scanning.

I moved to Microsoft Security Essentials aswell and although I've found it to be very slow scanning in comparison to ESET, Avast etc. it's still fairly good.
