Does anyone know where I could get a good deal on a bicycle- giant or trek? Something mid price range- not the cheapest end of the scale but not prepared to spend a fortune either.

Suewho ; what part of the country are you in ? Have you access to the bike to work scheme thru your employer , if you have you should try and utilise it . Only new to Tris in 09 and I bought bike for about 1200 that is a decent road bike and if required I can add clip on bars etc to make more Tri specific/
On the net Wiggle.co.uk or chainreactioncycles.ie are a good starting point . There are a few very good irish retailers from Wheelworx in Dublin to Nigelcycles in Galway .
Might be worth looking at this for some ideas

Hiya! I'm in Dublin/ Leinster area. Would the best thing to do be to go look at some actual bikes around Dublin and see if I can get a better price online once I've found something decent?

Any pointers on what I should be looking for in the bike that would make it good and also suitable to my height etc?

Try buy and sell or here:

http://www.cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/shbikes.asp# Theres guys are in tallaght.

I bought a 2nd hand bike last year from cycleways. I bought a Specialized Tarmac at 46% of price new, 2 yrs old with only a few scuffs here and there. Give them a ring to see if they have any 2nd stuff (they are on parnell street).

Definately try as many stores as you can and the like of the cyclesuperstore would be a great start and most of these guys would be more concerned in you getting the right bike rather than selling you something that will not suit you .
Not really a Bike head so cannot really recommend what to look for but test drive a few of them , little things like the saddle has to feel right for you, the group sets in your price range are going to be all reasonably similar in quality so would not get too hung up about that.
Looking at the reviews on other sites will help you decide what to look for , also bring a pen and paper with you when looking and write down details . A lot of places give % reductions if going thru the bike to work scheme, also allow for a few quid for helmets, gloves(if req), bike shoes(if req) and pedals etc.
When I started last year and I was looking for advice a more experienced friend told me not to spend too much your first bike as it definately wont be your last ... he was right .. if this takes off you will probably want to trade it in a year .
