Hi everyone, I'm hoping to do the winter swim next year and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend any good places for open water swimming besides the obvious Salthill! Thanking you all in advance! :)

The lake in Loughrea is really nice for swimming but is a bit of a trek from the city. GTC use Dangan regularily during the summer. The swim from the slip in Dangan up to the corner at Menlo and back fown. I believe it's around a 750m swim. There's also a nice lake, Lough Hackett, out near Tuam - once again, a bit of a trek from the city. I think Woodquay is a bit busy with boats and the like for any real distance swimming.

There is another lake that i used a few times in the run up to a tri last year and will use again this year.

Can't remember the name of it (if it has one) for the life of me but as you are driving out the moycullen road, just after you pass the turn for barna about a mile or so before moycullen there is a turn off to the right and there is a small lake down that boreen.

It's brown bog water and probably full of pike but it's quiet and close to town.
