UPC - Self-Install - How long to receive box?

Thinking about going the self-install HD route with UPC. I assume they have a delivery/postage service so How long (from the time I order) does it generally take to receive the box? If I take the self-install option do I then have to send my old box back to them?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Two days or so and the same people that deliver the new box take the old one away.

how do u get more info on self install, is it on the website and do u need to run extra cable for digital+ HD

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 299 ✭✭Compudaro

Interesting point Veronica, do you need an additional cable with UPC HD+ (as you would with its SKY equivalent)?

You need to have a point in the room you wish to install.

If don't have a point they must install one in that case forget self install.

You only need one cable for Digital plus HD it's not like Sky.

Each tuner on a Sky box needs it's own LNB from the dish that is why most Sky dishes have quad LNBs.

Cable only requires one cable per box.

No a wall point a white small plastic box stuck to your wall with cable connections.isolator.jpg

If you don't have one of these in the room you wish to install you have a problem.:)

I have one in the attic and the black cable runs down through ceiling into my upc tuner so is it just a matter of replacing? Also down stairs I have cable which is about 20yrs old connected outside to UPC so if I get digital+ could I move my current UPC box downstairs and use for multiroom?

If you have a cable with a good signal in the area you want the box thats all you need.

If you request multi-room you can keep your old box.
All you need is a cable with a good signal.

If the signal is bad on any of these cables then you will need UPC to install these professional points for you.

If they are running HD in your area that is have you checked?
If not it will just be regular Digital Plus.

Don't know about that end of it you are better off giving them a call in the morning on 1908.

Did some checking with my mate in UPC, and existing UPC customers will be charged as follows:
€60 Equipment Activation Fee for HD
    €20 Credit for ordering online
€10 Credit for ordering self install
So effectively you can connect up for €30 and €5 subscription per month thereafter.

Do you have to sign up for another 12 months as well then?

I ordered the self install Digital + box on Monday. Still no contact from UPC. Rang them this morning and they said they would prioritise my order. Still no contact. Not impressed:mad:

My mother ordered the digital + box from them on Monday for her place, she un-knowingly ordered it as self-install,it came by courier today which meant I had to traipse round on the icy footpaths to set it up for her!

It's simple as to set up,plug it into the wall, enter the activation code and job done!
There was no channel's coming through(not subscribed even tho she does)so a quick call to upc and 5 mins later was up and running.
Nice looking little box too and a lot quiter then the sky+ box ive got here.

I ordered an additional digital box (multiroom) on Tuesday which I intend to install myself, I had to ring them because the €50 charge for 'non-standard installs' refused to go away on the form on the web. The call agent suggested Friday morning delivery which I said was ok. He said someone would call me on Thursday to confirm the delivery.

Got a call this afternoon from a guy in Cyclone couriers who said they would deliver on Fri. afternoon. When I pointed out that I had agreed Fri. morning with UPC he said that the call agent shouldn't have narrowed it down to a half day - he seemed to suggest that they (the courier company) should be able to dictate which half of the day was designated for delivery i.e. what suited him was more important than what was convenient for me.

Anyway we compromised by him agreeing to deliver to my place of work so I won't have to hang around the house waiting for them.

The guy I was talking to didn't mention anything about €30 to activate it and it was activated about 5 mins later and yeah the website gives you the option to self install after you have completed the first order page(the page where you enter name/address/direct debit info etc..)

It does say under conditions that there is a charge of €30 and thanks for info.

Good old NTL/UPC still seem to be all over the shop!
I ordered the Max with Digi+ package on Monday and went for self install. Was e-mailed an acknowledgement soon after, with a sort of invoice attachment telling me I'd be paying €9 extra per month, and in the "once off charges" field was €0.
The other day I had a voicemail on my phone from UPC to contact them about my order. When I did, the person I spoke to had no idea what they might have wanted and said she'd pass it on to another department and they'd call me.
Still no call but on Wednesday I got a mail saying that installation had been booked for the date I requested!!? Next Monday between 9 and 12.
And there's an activation charge of €20.

I'll have to ring them tomorrow and see if I'm to wait for an installer or a courier, and where the €20 charge came out of.

New TV customers: A €20 Equipment Activation fee applies for each Digital box that is not ordered online. New TV customers who order online will get an online order credit of €20. Existing analogue customers not upgrading online to Digital TV or Digital TV with Digital+ pay €20 per box or €60 per box to upgrade to Digital TV with Digital+ HD. Those who upgrade online will get an online order credit of €20. A connection fee of €50 applies to each box ordered for Multi Room Viewing unless cabling is already in place for that box.... All information correct at (12/09).

Clear as mud but it could be read as: They're going to charge me €20 to activate the box but give me €20 credit for ordering online. Maybe. I'm moving from analogue TV to Max Digital+ btw.

I believe I will have to pay €10 for the courier, this wasn't mentioned on the website but it's probably included in the €50 for 'non-standard installs' which I think means they come to you and do the setup.

Do the courier company always phone you to say when they'll be coming? Phoned UPC - apparently self-install's take 3-5 days to be delivered.

The procedure is that you and the UPC call agent agree a delivery date and the day before the proposed delivery the courier calls you to confirm the time and that someone will be there to accept delivery but see my recent post (yesterday at 19:36) about some confusion in this regard.

Box was delivered today at the office, brought it home and setup is a breeze. It can take overnight for the card to be enabled with your TV package (channels) profile but there's a letter enclosed in the box with all the details and if you call a freephone number and read out the details they'll enable it straight away. Was up and running with my Max package in no time.

After reading this thread, I'm still confused:
    1. Can you order HD service self install pack online?
    2. How much once off fee for self install pack online?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 299 ✭✭Compudaro

A friend got her new HD box yesterday, the courier didnt take back her old box though.she didnt sign up for multiroom so what are the chances upc will charge her for still having it or do they just cancel the card with it?

If it's an old NTL box the chances are UPC don't want it.

Keep it safe just in case.

Just off the phone from Customer Service and was told that (1) I couldn't order a self install online and (2) irrespective of whether I order a HD box online or through Customer Services, the charge was €60 either way. This seems to contradict previous posts. Anyone any thoughts cause I'm certainly confused! :(

FYI - I ordered over a week ago and still have no box, despite many calls to UPC and many, many (empty?) promises.

We're now into week two and still nothing.

I ordered the HD box on sunday night.

Got an e-mail last night to say that the guy is booked to come and install it on friday. (I need him to extend the cable a few metres, so the €10 extra would be close to the cable if i bought it)

    Im in waterford.

Oh and btw i e-mailed online sales about the €60 charge. The guy said it indeed was €60 but €20 would be taken off that when i was billed (as the fineprint on the website says)

Guys, i have a garage converted out the back of my parents house, i have been using a video sender thingy to beam down some movies etc, would this be considered multiroom viewing or would they refuse to do do you think?

    Thanks in advance.

This is up to Sky not UPC.

I can wait for Movies on Demand if they have a decent selection of HD films it will be goodbye to Sky Movies.

I went for the self install option but I have a ceist in relation to the cable from the box on the wall (pictured above). Is it a straight box swap whereby the same coaxial cable going into my existing pace "gathering data" box will be the same cable going into the new digital+ HD box ?

Or is it a new /different cable that goes into the HD box ?

i have had ntl as my tv provider and have now gone for the phone / broadband package - was not aware that i had done the self install - and am a tad lost - anyone else managed to do this ?
i have not got the wireless option

    thanks in advance
