hey again. Just wondering at what point do people normally get someone to check out a used car for them before they buy it, even when from a dealership?

Also is it a good idea to phone up the dealership first to begin negotiatons and set up an appointment? For example would you advise to ring up and say your bottom line is 13,500 for a car quoted at 15,000 and is it worth bothering coming in? And if they said yes then could you assume the negotiations will start at 13,500?

Any tips for first timer going into dealership to buy car? have only bought from friend of a friend before so I'm green!

First bit of advice, never give a bottomline... Once you've given a bottom line you've effectively lost.

Second, concentrate on the negatives of the car, never the good parts... even if it's perfect for you think of something bad to say. Make up a story "a friend told you" about some nightmarish situation that costs money.

Third, always do it in person, unless you are there the dealer won't really care about your ideas and other options.

Also, if you're going to buy a car because it's that car specifically, don't tell them so, try and lead them around a bit. If they think you're only interested in that one model of car, they will play on you.

(I used to work for a Ford dealership)

Thanks Ady that's a great help! Yep I am sure about the model that I want, but how do I get them to bring me to that model of car without telling them I'm looking for it?

How about if I was to go in and name three models I'm considering and then that way not let on there is one in particular that I want?
