    Here is your chance to vote for who you think was the Irish Athlete of the Year for 2009.

    These 10 were the top 10 from votes recieved for each of the Athlete of the Quarters.

    Poll will close on Sunday at 5pm. Votes will be merged with the regular voting panel to decide the winner.

    Of the 29 athletes who got nominations throughout the year he wasn't one. This list is the top 10 of that 29. Albeit its very focused on track and field, road and cross. This is probably due to the fact that ultra running will have very small exposure within the larger athletics family and the majority are unaware of even its existence. Similarly, you look at any global Athlete of the Year awards and its athletes from the T&F, Cross, Road worlds who are solely on them.

    Another difference with Ultrarunning is that it has a seperate governing body, the IAU, which is recognised by the IAAF. (Mountain running has a similar arrangement).

    Olive Loughnane is the Irish Athlete of the Year as voted by the Boards posters. A glorious silver medal in Berlin was the highlight. Its great to look at Olive's progress through the years and the belief and perserverance she must of had to keep going. Not finished yet of course but she has got better and better over the past decade after a blip in the middle.
