Numb feet - new Kayanos

I went to Runways last week to get new runners as while the prices in Arnotts sale were impressive, there was no service and I needed some.

Brought in my old Asics GT 2130 and told the man the issues I've had. Sore knees after half marathon which physio told me was related to my weak hips, and sometimes numbness in my feet but mentioned that my old ones are size 6 which is my actual size and he advised they should be half a size bigger.

Anyways he pulled out the kayano on the basis that it's a support shoe which the 2130 is and consequently this is the right shoe for me. Popped me on the threadmill for a 2 minute jog and I told him that the size seemed fine but there was a lot more padding than on my old ones but he said that's beacuse they were old!

Did a 10k and had numb feet but blamed that on the cold weather. However 2 gym sessions since and still had numb feet. In fact before I'd left for the gym they were numb yesterday.

Any suggestions on why this is happening and what I should do? Am very disappointed with runways as I asked for assistance and was in and out of there within 15 minutes and no gait analysis or corrcet runners :(

You expect gait analysis for free? Really? Maybe take a look elsewhere and see how much it costs. There not going to do it for free. Cop on.

I bough trail runners in Runways too the other day, and found Ash to be excellent. He knows his stuff and is a decent runner which also helps to instill confidence in you. 15mins is alot of time to spend with one person.

Numb feet. I had numb feet after in running in mine the other night but I would just put it down to new shoes. It takes a bit of time to get comfortable and used to the change. It takes time.

    hi there,
Are the shoes tight across the toe box? Have you a wide foot?
this is one of the most common reasons for the numb feet which is terrible.
Run with your old shoes and see if any numbness occurs
I had the same problem with a pair of Nike, as soon as i changed the shoe (which i had fitted) the problem dissapeared
    hope this is helpful

I know this might sound stupid but I get numb feet when I wear certain socks. I run between forty and fifty miles a week and have been doing so for a few years so I have accumulated a fairly extensive collection of running socks. For some strange reason when I wear a particular pair of socks my feet get numb. I have never given it much thought cause it never really bothered me but it might be that they are too tight. I also wear Kayanos by the way. You should experiment with a few different sock types. The socks that dont aggree with me are double layer adidas.

Whoa snack.ie, no need to be rude. I'm quite happy to pay as much as necessary for their expertise, that's why I went there!

Don't have wide feet and don't think they're tight across the toe box but I do have a very high in step. Tried two different pairs of socks already but will give another a go. Thanks.

I have never paid for gait analysis! Have had it done 3 times in 3 different places and all same result for free. Plus I thought someone said here recently that gait analysis was free in Runways.

As for 15 min being a lot of time to spend with someone. If some guy came to fix my washing machine, or if I was at a doctor, OR if I was buying some electrical goods in an electrical goods store for €150+ I expect at least 15mins of that persons time. For that 15 mins the OP prob paid €10 a min, there are premiership footballers who don't earn money at that rate.

Gait analysis is free in Amphibian King in Bray.

A shop assistant should want to spend 15 mins with a customer if they're spending E100.

As a student, I spent 25 mins with customers helping them decide which airmax they want!

    Lipi,

Check if you are tightning your laces too much or is the lacing any different from your old shoes.

I would agree with vistastar that you should go fro a run in your old shoes to confirm if it is your kayanos or not.

If the numbness in in your toes its simply that you are tying the laces too tight across the upper part of your instep.

Try a lock lacing technique to relieve the pressure - http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/locklacing.htm

or play around with the other lacing techniques on that site. I used to get numbness in my toes until I discovered this lacing technique.

No fault on the part of runways as this would happen with any shoes. Ive gone to Ash before and found him to know his stuff.

    Hope this helps.

I also agree, don't think 15minutes is long at all.
i you do the gait analysis in your shoes or barefeet?(or both)
I agree with some other posters, maybe an issue regarding the width of your feet.
ps Amphibain King do it for free!!!

I have had the same problem with kayanos no matter how loose the laces were. It got so bad that the numbness would go up as far as my shins/lower leg. I am trying out new nike equalons tonight and will see how it goes but won't know for sure as it will be a treadmill run.

some people find the new lacing system makes it tighter.

I think the Kayano 15's are slightly better suited to narrow feet, possibly due to the lacing system. Suits me, because I've got oddly narrow feet :)

+1 on this , not sure what can be added to a discussion with these sort of comments :

I have always used Kayano's as I am large and both over pronate and have bad bunions. I have had issues with the Kayano 15 (bought after gait analysis) and this became apparent within the first 2 training sessions . My right ankle in particular had become numb and also numbness across the mid soles in both feet

I do think the Kayano 15 doesn't suit my broader foot but I compounded the issue by removing the laces and adding the elastic quick lock laces which pulled the shoes even tigher adding to the issue. When I reverted to original laces the problem reduced, when I went back to my Kayano 14's the problem disappeared .
Also learned last year do not remove the insoles and replace with your own -Knee injury was the result.
Not suggesting you might have altered the runners in anyway but even subtle changes can impact the effect.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

Did a threadmill run yesterday with non running socks and there was definitely less numbness. Hopefully I'll get outdoors over the weekend for a proper run again and will play around with the laces too as they are slightly different to my old runners.
