    Hi there,
I am hoping to get married in the summer. We just need to find a venue that we can hire. We are not having traditional wedding cos its way too expensive. Instead we want to hire a function room and throw our own party in the evening. All we need is a venue that will hold about 200 guests and enough room for a 4 piece band. Anywhere in Dublin would be great but north dublin would be even better. We don't want food JUST A FUNCTION ROOM!

Thank you so much for any help you can give me!

firstly 200 is a lot. Average wedding is 140-150 even with afters. So you'll be looking for a big room. I'm guessing you want to supply your own food which will rule out nearly every hotel and restaraunt. Gaa or sports club halls Of which there are several would be glad of the business. May I suggest though that you do go the normal wedding route with a hotel but pick cheapest meal. No seat covers. No wine. No toast. No flowers. Nothing extra. Have great entertainment. Invite 200 and it will pay for itself.

I think a GAA or community centre would be your best bet. I'm not familiar with north dublin venues, but I'd say try your locals and go from there. Also, if a member of your family is a member of a GAA club, they might give you a discount if you rent their club. If you're planning to provide your own food, then as Clint_Silver said, you'll have to forget about hotels/restaurants. They won't let you serve your own food on the premises as they can't be sure it prepared in accordance with their health and safety standards.

Do ALSAA at the airport still rent out function rooms? that would be an option if they do.

What area are you looking for? My dads gaa club has done a few weddings, nice finger food for evening parties too! It's Peregrines in Clonsilla.

I don't think this is the case in all club houses. Usually you'd hire a professional caterer to provide the food so all of the food would be cooked off site and they would only need a preparation area to get things ready.

I've been to lots of do's in club houses where they served up food from a caterer.

One thing to bear in mind is that a lot of club houses may not have the facilities to even prepare or store food which would make it more difficult for bringing a caterer in.

Thank you for all your suggestions - we are thinking of a nice GAA club but a lot of the ones we have seen are pretty dead looking. Because it's a wedding we would prefer something a bit more dressed up looking. I know I'm being fussy here so sorry. 200 people is a lot but we both have HUGE families which does not help things.

Remember most GAA clubs will allow you to decorate the room yourself, I helped out decorating one for a wedding with table cloths and balloons etc.

Also I completely forgot, I covered a wedding once where the couple hosted their reception in the pub opposite the Botanic Gardens, the Addison, now they did have food, they had a carvery but I am sure they may rent it out without food also. There are also many pubs that have nice function rooms too.

Have a look at kettles country house, near swords. I djed a wedding party there
and it was a nice big room and they had finger food only.

Id second kettles, nice venue. I know they try and dedicate themselves to weddings but try them anyway. Also try plaza in tyrellstown. Biggggg room.

I think your problem would be if you tried and book a friday or saturday in a hotel, even if they didnt have a booking now, theyed say no and might hold on for a full dinner wedding. If you were willing to wait til maybe 10-12 weeks out they might be more amenable to you getting the room if they didnt have a booking. Draw up a list of your top 10-12 hotels as choices, try them nearer the date to see if theyll do it. Rather then settling on a sports club.

Are you getting catering in yourself or expecting the hotel/club to do it at non wedding prices.

In club houses etc you can supply your own food, but in hotels and restaurants the only food they will let you bring in is the wedding cake.

I got married in Malahide Rugby club too! It was fantastic and Ken, the manager, is a total sweetheart. Give them a ring and ask. I can't see why he wouldn't allow it. The building looks pretty cool too. Just go to the website and there are pics you can look at to see what the room looks like when it's done up.,.I loved the building and especially the function room as there is so much natural light. ANy questions just ask me.
