If you are up there are for a while, pm me for a running session when the days get longer. The usual one is caused Fat Arse Boulevard which is about 5 miles, its around the ring road that Pee Flynn built. There is a running track around behind the Hospital as well but I have never been there to be honest.

Theres a road out the back of castlebar town I thiink Sion hill is the name of the estate which has a real long steep hill as well and last but not least some of the crowd at work go for walks around Lough Lannagh which is rumoured to have plenty of joggers as well

The nicely named fat arse boulevard is also very well lit up so night running is ideal (haven't ran there as I am in Westport) but know the road .
In this weather not alot of options that I am aware of.

U tried running the new railway line in westport?

You could try running on the track around the community pitches at the back of Ballyvary School. Its about 6 miles out the N5 from Castlebar.

The track is about 750 metres per circuit and the facilities have a new adult outdoor gym which might be of interest too.

PM me if you want any more details.

That running track belongs to GMIT, so you will probably have to get their permission to train on it.When it was owned by the Health Board, I regularly trained there. 30 laps every evening after work. Great stuff until I got old:rolleyes:

You can run away on that track these days. A lot of people do - there's a car park right beside - just park the car there, hop out and run. It's under snow at the moment though.

There's a few other routes around the town as well which are suitable for this time of year. You can park your car up beside the Welcome Inn, run up towards town, take a left at Rocky's bar, left again at the traffic lights and then up Knockthomas hill which is proabably a good 0.5 k up down the other side and around again. The circuit is a good hill-training route and 1 lap is just under 1 mile.

Park at the bottom of Castlestreet behind the Daniola chipper. Run up the hill, around the mall, swing left, up past Gmit onto Big Ass Boulevard and take a right back down towards the roundabout beside Tesco, up the hill beside argos, swing left, past the post office, down the main street and around again. Not sure how long it is but 1 lap takes me about 12 - 13 minutes and has a few hilly bits. 4 laps of it is a nice run.

When the evenings get longer there's a few nice runs running in the Turlough Road and back out the n5, but this time of year the roads too dodgy - i'd only run this road at first light in the summer.

There's plenty of runs around - this time of year you have to drive, park and run though.

ive been in gmit for 3 years now and my favourite run is out to the windmills, towards gleann aolean/glenisland, then take right to get to windmills, back by zion hill estate, about 14km i think, beautiful run.

Haven't been there in a few months but they are doing it up at the moment , they have tarmaced it and I think they are adding lights along the route :
    Nice alternative to the streets.

Was on it there during Xmas, nice job, plenty wide for runners and cyclists and lights on it too, a nice lap as it takes you out at the bus depot, then up the Quay hill and onto another lap.
Not sure what the lap is but I wud think (roughly) between 3 and 4km.

The track is open to all, was on it last nite and it wasn't too bad considering the freezing conditions but from what I gather the Fit4Life events are cancelled there this week.

Is the running track around the soccer pitch at the rear of the college? Hard to tell with the snow covering it:D

Ya they've tarmacked all the way up as far as high street now, really well done. Lights are on it but havn't started working yet, one problem i can see for running there is that its tought ground and u really feel it on the legs

Ya great being able to train without having to look out for traffic, and nice out it leads onto the murrisk road/the quay where you can go for miles

Not sure if anyone here might be intersted but there is a friend of mine here in Wesport who does a bit of personal training/coaching and has done some Tri's who has arranged track sessions for me and some friends previously(at a small cost) for a bit of variety ,speed and structure :
I am going back to him anyway for a few sessions and arranging something for either the track in castlebar or westport.
I am only a plodder and the level is not high but these can be as tough or as easy as you want . Offers some structure and speed work, can work on diets, strenghts etc.
Will look to Sat/Sun mornings 1hr on the track followed but 4/5m run on ring road .
