Should be between 80-100 Euros delivered for the screen from a reputable seller on flea bay and about a week at most to deliver.

Takes about 15-30 minutes to fit the new one.

I have heard of shops charging between 200-400 for a new screen.

    Your call.

How long ago did you buy it?
I don't recommend replacing the screen yourself unless you know what you are doing, you could just end up doing more damage to it.
To get it replaced your looking at at least 150 if not more.

do you have house insurance, might be able to claim under that if you have contents insured (though might have had to have been named)

I think most policies cover you for anything up to about €500.

OP, before you go wasting any time, check if it still starts up - you should still be able to see part of the screen, and you should see it booting up or getting some familiar options.

If it doesn't start up, the hard drive is screwed and it's only trashworthy. So someone with some savvy could strip it down and sell some components on ebay for a few quid.

op, if you have access to a pc monitor either crt or lcd, you could try hooking this up to the laptop to see if the laptop boots and works okay? if it does you can get screen cheap on ebay and ask a techie friend to fit it if thats an option? TBH i wouldnt advise fitting it yourself unless you have some idea whats involved .. if you get a new comp the old one might still be useful if hooked up to a screen

I'd just use it as a server and get a new one, if I could afford to.
