what are other peoples way of explaining to their wife/partner/husband/parent that they need more than 1 bike for their sport/recreation purpose etc ? i have one bike cost 600 euros last sept and i am buying one in 3 weeks for 1900 euro , any ideas on the approach or should i just hide it inthe car or shed ??

i have returned to cycling last summer to help in losing weight and getting fitter . i do know if i had a good bike it would encourage me more to use it !

"Do you have any idea how much this bike costs??!!"

Works most of the time. I am allowed keep one bike indoors, as long as it is clean. I have a surfboard in the garage that has already taken a few minor knocks, my dad is not the most careful person in the world. I use his clumsiness as my justification for keeping the bike indoors.

Hiding it in the garage worked for me - I've only just told her about the one she got me for Xmas:)

forget to say the new one will be kept inside... wont be easy to hide it then

    Bikes, wives. Pick three.

...to which the obvious response is "how about three bikes, an ex-wife and no house?"

I've 3 bikes inside and no explaining required. GF was actually supportive of me getting the new bike - although she doesn't know the final cost yet. It ran very slightly over budget

Ah 2 bikes is easy. Its when you end up with 6, thats when the moaning starts.

Just get the bike and buy her something nice too. Works for me.:D

Two bikes was easy. The third should be more difficult though.

On the plus side, I will be getting herself a bike for a birthday present so that means I can have at least 4 I think.

Hmmm. There are two possibilities here: either you've struck gold and should propose immediately, or she's having an affair.

With one of the bikes from the sound of it.

Does the bike sleep in the bed and you on the couch?

i think buying herself something too might do the trick... maybe something for me too.... maybe lingerie ???

    DANGER WILL ROBINSON!
depending on the woman in question this move may be read as: "Honey, I've just bought myself another new and expensive toy! To celebrate I would like some sex now! You're welcome!"

There are also courses which might fit the bill: sports massage, bike mechanics, cooking. Perhaps French or Italian lessons. If you can arrange them for Saturday and Sunday mornings, all the better.

i did sell my classic 531 bike before x mas , so luckily i told herself at time i will be replacing it, just forget to say how much i am spending !

I've 2 bikes and I'm probably going to get a third (a PX titanium sportive!!)

    I rationalise it as follows:-

    1. Bike 1 - flat bar hybrid, is for going cycling with herself and the kids & I can't sell it because she bought it for me!

    2. Bike 2 - Boardman Team Carbon - necessary to keep me fit and trim and for the commute to work. It has to stay in the house because carbon fibre must be kept warm or it crumbles to dust!!! When she complains I point out that unlike her cat it doesn't any of the following:-
    • cough up fur balls
    • puke
    • leave hair all over the place
    • jump up on work tops
    • hiss at me (it doesn't like me!)
    • claw things
    • sh1t in the garden
    • yowl at 3am to be let out
    3. Proposed bike 3 is needed because it's titanium and when we got married last year I got a titanium wedding ring - the bike will match the ring and will always remind of that wonderful day!

In fairness, she doesn't complain about me spending money on bike stuff and only rarely passes comment about bikes being kept in the house.

I also bought her a Pashley last year which I think helped smooth things over a lot!

if she asks why do u need 2 bikes as her why does she need 10 handbags!

i am getting my fifth bike in april and have given up trying to explain the need for more than one bike a long time ago.
they just don,t understand why u cannot time trial or do a sportive on a mountain bike.

just spend the next few weeks looking forward to getting it and then enjoy riding it while trying to figure out how u ever managed to ride your old bike.

Ouch. Lets hope I've just struck gold. She is really happy with the new "fitter" me anyway ;)

You send her to my house where there are enough parts to open my own shop, 8 sets of wheels and 6 bikes, 2 of which are only partly assembled getting their winter rebuild and on bike stands in the spare downstairs bedroom.

She will think nothing of your 2 bikes then. In fact she will be relieved at getting off so lightly.

How do I justify it ? I don't. Herself is always coming home with bags of shoes, clothes, handbags, we all have our hobby/obsession. I have offered to ditch the bikes and take up drinking as a sport again, so far she prefers the bikes, especially since I built her one from the spares and wreckage of some of my old ones.

simple you just say your €600 bike is your 'winter bike'
and the new one is main new ride
other bikes to get into the stable are:

    mtb (for mtb'ing)
    cross bike for (cyclocross)
    hack bike (for commuting)
touring bike for..can you guess yet ;)

way down the line when racing
    TT bike
4 sets of wheels for different uses (racing) aero speed, weight, descending, and a car to pass them out to you when the course typography demands it.

    amatuer

We did this list a while back. :)

I think only Blorg took it as a literal instruction.

the usual answer i get anyway is " you can only use one of them at a time anyway" like what a previous poster said.

I think it is more like she doesent like getting up early in the morning time to mind our 2 yr old son than anything else !

anytime i do go out on bike i leave at 8 am or before and back after 2.5 hrs. early morning suits me because rest of day is left for other things, plus i feel lot more ready for a spin when im fresh !

I recently bought a pair of wheels for €750, (Zipp 303s thank you very much). The solution is, just don't tell her!
Collecting bikes is a good habit, a good wife should realise that!
And good bikes should be stored carefully indoors, not in smelly damp shed!

after that you can have 42 bikes, cause she wont be around to give a sh!t anymore :p

Oooh.... 20% off the Stealth at PX this week.... I know they put the price up a bit before the sale but still..

    You know it makes sense.

It's a lot more expensive though... They used to have one at €999 with free build and delivery but now just have fancy builds at €2,649...

More to the point they only have blue which I'm not too fond of colour wise (blue is not a fast colour.) Unless I went for the medium; I am between sizes and reckon I could handle the drop...

I only get planning permission for one bike at a time because apparently "that's all you can ride at one time" (waits for smut:D). but I have upgraded five times in the last four years so my standard reply is "Do you know how much (insert random name here)'s new golf clubs cost?-and that's not even real exercise". She's heard that line so often it's getting like UK Gold at this stage.

The other secret is, if possible, cash or laser, not credit card;) In fairness, how often does she even go in the shed anyway-especially when you tell her about the mice in there;)

....and a €7 Argos bike cover hides a multitude too.

My wife genuinely doesn't care how many bikes I own. She just wants me to help more around the house and kids. Oh and move them out of the spare room.

I will shortly be taking delivery of bike no. 4. She will be known as The Bitch and I will ride her as such ;-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 335 ✭✭bikermartin

im probably same ,if i do more around the house , and help with kids more she may be not as narky about the idea, still wont tell her how much it was. she says 200 euro would get a halfords bike !!!

    LOL - the eternal question.
My wife now has two bikes though so I don't get too much hassle anymore. Seemingly the MTB was "too heavy and didn't climb well" :)

Tell her that you need 4 or 5 bikes like all the different types listed in the other threads, then tell her as a compromise that you can make do with just the 2! (only for the moment though:D).

I currently have 7 bikes and 2 more that my wife does not know about yet stashed at my fathers house. Because I usually break them (frame) every 2 to 3 years, I usually need a supply of frames/bikes to replace them.

She also knows there is "stuff" up the attic but as she cannot climb the ladder (fear of heights) she has never even got close to finiding out what I have stashed. Wheels, components, frames etc.

I think when it got to about 4 did the questions and queries stop. It can be a little bit like the 'Shoes or handbags' discussion for women. The LOGIC there is that they are needed for the appropriate outfit. Similarly the multiple bikes are needed for the appropriate cycling events.
