Currently training for connamarathon and looking to work on some hills.

Anyone got any recommendations for routes close to city centre within each reach of public transport i.e. Dart/Luas?

Currently using Phoenix Park but want to some variation. Cheers

+1, IMRA race on Sunday in Howth would give you an excellent intro to routes etc. It's my fav spot to run

I'm thinking of giving the run on Sunday a go just for that purpose. Not quite up to racing it but I figure it would give me a good intro.

LUAS to Sandyford terminal and run up 3 rock and back?

DART to Bray, run up Bray Head, down off the back into Greystones and back to Bray by the Cliffwalk.

Dublin Bus to Enniskerry and run practically any loop from there, it's all hilly - or just up to Glencree and back might do.

+1 Howth Head. From the dart in Sutton, a loop up and around Howth is about 11.5K. Make sure you go the Sutton way (facing the bay) around first - the Howth village route is hardcore.

Yeah, Howth hill is a monster from the village up to the summit. Probably only 2.5k but raises 452 feet (on the garmin) to the summit pub. You then have it mostly easy back to Sutton and flat back to the Dark Station / Village.

Taking it in the other direction, you have about a 4K more gently climb (more sustained effort) to the summit, then a sprint to the village. It’s a knee killer, and not recommended in this weather…

Luas out to Tallaght and run up by Bohernabrena cemetary where there is a monster of a hill. Perfect for repeats. And close by you could run up by Balinascorney where theres another monster climb.

Do you have this on a map or saved rout on your garmin, i'm not 100 miles from this area and would be handy for me.

Y'know, that's right up the road from me and I've never bothered running up there...

Out to Killiney by DART. Lots of options for running around Killiney hill.

The hills in Connemarathon are vastly overrated IMO. Certainly less of a climb than the south west side of the Phoenix Park. I'd hold off on booking the Sherpas if I were you. ;)

Thanks for all the tips. Some great recommendations.

I think I know that route in tallaght, is it on way to hellfire?

Not really.... although Tallaght up to Hellfire and beyond would make for a good hilly run.

Have a look at the route that takes you to the start of the IMRA corrig race here. That's more like the route being discussed.

Is there any hilly routes in the city centr itself for hill repeats - i.e. within 1/2 mile of o'connell street

Not really, hills up around Christchurch but anywhere with 0.5m of O'Connell St will be very busy. The Kyber in the Phoenix Park might be your best option.

As an addition to the info on Howth, I find the best hill for 200m repeats there is around the corner from the Summit pub up to the car park, a really nice steady incline. Tough!

Does anyone know any parks with a decent hill in South Dublin? I use the ones near the band stand in Bushy park but they are a bit short.

The parks in south Dublin are generally quite flat, but as mentioned previously, Ticknock and Killiney Hill are both good options. I'm particularly partial to the roads and trails around Carrickgollogan/The Scalp. In fact, I'm heading up that way shortly. :)

Would you have any more details on this run i.e. a map of some sort? It´d be one I´d like to do.

The boys from Belvedere College often do hill repeats on North Great George's Street. It is a fairly quiet street and a good steep but short hill. Just off Parnell Street. You could also try nearby Hill Street but it is a very, very busy street.

If your looking for hills for repeats try Marley Park, up near the tennis courts.

Detailed maps of the forest trails in the area can be downloaded at Coillte outdoors:

    cruagh-tibradden.pdf

Ive mapped a looped run to 2-Rock and back, starting and finishing in Marlay Park, on Mapmyrun. The frequent 16 bus to Santry via the City Centre, stops at the park entrance. Alternatively, the Luas stop at Balally is about 1.5 miles from the park.
MAPMYRUN: Marlay- 2 Rock- Tibradden- LOOP (11.82 MI.)
Click 'hybrid map' for a better view.
The run is just under 12 miles, including Marlay Park itself, if you do the full circuit around 3-Rock and the summit of 2-Rock. It can shortened to under 10 miles if you bypass the summit and stay on the Wicklow Way.
The route accesses the Pine Forest and Tibradden Mountain from a quiet country lane at Kelly's Glen, and avoids the R116 and R113, which can be busy at times. The paths around Tibradden have been improved over the last couple of years, with a long stretch of boardwalk.
