I got my first welfare payment of the year today and I've been docked 14.4%. I thought it was supposed to be 4.4%? Has anyone else been docked this much?

I'm due to collect my dole on Friday, so I can't confirm anything yet. What payment were you getting?

    Jobseekers Allowance.

My wife got a similar cut too (she was getting €146,but this week only got €133)and I also thought it was supposed to be only about 4%. What's going on?

as far as i am aware the cut definitely wasnt that much, i could be wrong though.

I would think its more likely that your payments have been cut because of the bank holidays, depends on what week the payment was for? It probably had new years day taken from it?The payment for christmas week should also have been down because of christmas day and stephens day.

I'm getting JA and on Friday picked up my €196.00, down from €204.30 last year. A 4% drop, which I expected. No deductions for any days over Christmas.

May I ask what age you are? They did say they were going to make cuts based on age also.

The amount you get for a qualified adult decreased as well, so you get 8 euro less per week off the main payment, and 6 euro less per week off the qualified adult rate.

So in total we're down 13 euro per week, which, if you're not entitled to the full amount due to means testing, could be more than 4%.

I was reduced by 8 euro too but im confused as to why i would have days taken away for me for christmas, stephens day and new years day when others havent?

is it because I am working part time and claiming, i cant understand why that would affect this though?

Casual or part-time employees must have worked at least 40 hours in the 5 weeks ending on the day before the public holiday to establish a statutory entitlement to pay in respect of a public holiday.

Part-time or casual workers are not entitled to Jobseeker's Benefit or Allowance in respect of paid public holidays.

NOTE: Good Friday is a bank holiday not a public holiday therefore employers are not legally required to pay in respect of that day. If the employer does pay in respect of Good Friday, JA/JB is not payable.

    PUBLIC HOLIDAYS
    There are nine public holidays:
    New Year's Day
    St. Patrick's Day
    Easter Monday
    First Monday in May
    First Monday in June
    First Monday in August
    Last Monday in October
    Christmas Day
    St Stephen's Day

    Just checking I understand this:

If I wasn't getting any temp work, I would get the full rate for each of the weeks over Christmas.

But since I am, I don't get any benefit for Christmas, Stephens or New Year's days - ie effectively there is 1/2 a week when I don't get any benefit and didn't get any temping either, 'cos surprise, surprise, companies were closed.

I'm penalised for working! That's mad.

im in the same situation and i find it hard to come to terms with too. I wasn't entitled to be paid for my bank holidays from work because they have cut my hours so much. so because i am sticking with whatever bare hours i can get here and there (sometimes meaning i work only 4 hours a day getting paid 32 euro, but having 22 taken away because im working that day) im being penalised.

If im taking this up wrong then i apologise, its just sometimes i think the system can be soo unfair. I could just as easily not bother work the days that work out at basically earning 10 euro for 4 hours work, but i still do it because its the right thing to do.

No, "worked at least 40 hours in the 5 weeks ending on the day before the public holiday to establish a statutory entitlement to pay in respect of a public holiday." Basically if you have done those hours, you would be entitled to be paid for it by your employer. So your employer would pay you for the bank holiday and not Social Welfare - if SW were to pay you, you would be paid on the double.
If you didn't work those hours then you would get paid by SW.

If you havn't worked those hours then, would you be entitled to contact the sw for them to pay it to you? I had those days reduced even though I haven't worked 40 hours in the last 5 weeks coming up to christmas etc.

What exactly is the qualified adult rate and how exactly does that affect my payment?
