Partial denture .. upgrade from plastic to metal

I am unfortunate enough to be the owner of a font lower plastic denture with 3 teeth. Have it for over a year now and getting on ok, I guess.

My dentist had recommended to me that I should consider going for the metal based version, once I had become used to and comfortable with what I have.
Advantages being, stronger, lighter, less bulky section underneath the tounge. Now I wouldnt mind having less material in the underneath tounge area, as that is probably the worst aspect of what I have at present. Dentist also says, that the metal version would be better for my gums over the long term, as with less flexing in the structure, the gums would see less pressure exerted on them.
Downside is I need to spend over a grand for the upgrade. I can afford it, so I just want to get an informed opinion as to the true value of the upgrade in terms of having better comfort and long term oral health outcome.
    Appreciate informed opinions.

    Thanks.

    Hi MI5,

Sorry to jump on your thread but I think I'm going to have to have a similar denture fitted.

If you don't mind could you tell me how long it took to get used to the fitting and how did it affect general things like talking and eating please.

I assume you mean the plastic plate.

Well, had it put in immediately on extraction of the 3 offending teeth.
Managed to eat soft foods from 5 hours after they were put in.
But I was having a lot of speaking difficulties, especially with words ending in certain letters and combinations of letters.
In my job I have to speak a lot on the phone, so I decided to go back on the second day. Had a good few calls to deal with, but managed away okish at best.
Next day however, I had a call from a really important customer about a big contract and all sorts of complications with same.
No joking, call lasted over 3 hours. I did much if not most of the talking, and in the heat of battle almost forgot I had the damn things in.
When call was finished, I realized that there was no need for worry about the future. Within a month to six weeks I had forgotten totally about the fact the they might interfere with my speech. I guess at times they do trip me up on the occasional mword, but it does not bother me.

As far as eating is concerned, I manage pretty much every thing except stuff like apples which require a full frontal bite.
If in a resuraunt I would avoid the tougher stuff, just in case!!

All in all, I got on grand. I am just hoping the proposed new metal version would give me a further good improvement in outcome, in terms of not having the bulky part under my tounge, AND mabe diving into a granny smith

That's good news M15. I've been dreading this to be honest and I too am in a job where there is a high emphasis on communication. Your experience with the fitting has put me at ease a lot. I'm still dreading it though.
