Uploading music from I-pod to a different PC

Basically I'm looking for the most convenient way to upload music from my new I-pod classic 160g on to a PC/laptop.

I'm a long way from home/default i-tunes account and I want to copy my music on to a hard-drive for safe keeping and also to share with housemates. I've had a quick look around at some sites and there seems to be a few ways you can go about it manually (with mixed results depending on the model, judging from forum comments) by accessing and copying files which initially appear hidden once you connect with usb.

Theres also a freeware service called SharePod which seems to be able to do this automatically for you. Im wondering if anybody has any advice/info or experience in doing this? I have my I-pod set to manage music folder manually. Any help appreciated

I've used Sharepod before, only to move a few file
mind you, and it worked very well. I don't think there are any other options beside that.
