Been hearing a lot of rumors about this years College Week, such as:
    • Its going to be held entirely on campus, (Seems highly unlikely)
    • Its being held in specific locations across the city.
    • Its being held in a field in Ballybrit and its going to be like a festival

Also to go along with the festival theory is a rumor that Florence and The Machine are playing.

Can anyone lend a bit of truth to these theories or does anyone know the exact truth?

Highly doubtful Tommy. Was Rag Week ever really an organised affair?

The Students' Union are trying to organise a festival-type event, and it'll be based entirely on campus in an attempt to keep people from wreaking havoc in town. You'll have to pay for entry into the festival, and from the numbers I was hearing, they could be expecting over €100 out of people for it, which seems like an unlikely number as most people would rather keep that money and get hammered. Still, it might not be going ahead at all, but I'm sure we'll hear a lot about it soon after we go back.

I think they ran into trouble with the council over the tent thing in Dangen.

I acn't see how they'll be able to keep people from going into town, especially if they intend to charge €100 for the thing.

Look people i doesn't matter the college do, RAG week will be like every other year. People will drink all day every day for the week! The pubs and clubs will be packed.

It doesn't matter what the college try to organise but i can tell you it wont make a difference. The students are getting worse, been in Galway for a number of years now and slowly but surely RAG week gets worse every year, and this February wont be any different. I wish all those organising events the best of luck and hope they prove me wrong!

Try telling the Students' Union that! If they had the festival for free they might have some hope of keeping people in college, but charging for it will just push people from college and into town. Not looking forward to it this year!

    I haven't had a bad RAG week yet:D

I don't really see how the college is going to prevent the students from going into town. GMIT have their RAG week on the same week as us so there are still going to be events in the clubs in town. They're going to have to do something really spectacular on campus to keep the students there!!

Even if they do a festival-type thing no one's gonna stay overnight in a tent in freezing February weather. Any efforts to curb people going into town are going to be incredibly futile...

It does seem pretty obvious that these attempts to quieten the students down is just for show. I mean all the clubs are set to open during the day by the looks of it so isnt organising some poor show on campus awfully futile?

well rag week is (under everything) a charity fundraising event. Just heard confirmed that nothing will be held off campus. there will be acts held in aras na mac leinn and around that area and acts will be chargin on the door.

calvin harris should be in the Bailey Allen hall at ~€20
coronas should also be there at ~€5

i dont know about any other acts...i was kinda drunk at the class reps council meeting.

they are also trying to sort out alcohol being allowed in the bailey allen hall but its not certain.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,454 ✭✭✭mink_man

    ara...sure you'll have that!

Where is the Bailey Allen hall?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 59 ✭✭jighooligan

So we can have alcohol free gigs with (what I see as) mediocre acts and pay for that or we can go into town while the clubs are open for the GMIT Rag week which as far as I know runs the same week as College Week? What do the Uni think is gonna happen?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 59 ✭✭jighooligan

So now that RAG week has been moved does that change anything?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,982 ✭✭✭Caliden

Rag week will be whenever Cuba/GPO have their foam parties, i.e. whenever GMIT RAG week is, despite what the college try to organise.

ye'r supposed to be gettin calvin harris

Its the big hall in Aras Na Mac Leinn!

Whats being said now that only 2 days of College "Week" will be organised with on campus activities with the rest being held in town!

Also considering the GMIT Rag week is still the last week of Feb how great are the college expecting attendance to be that week?

Wait was aido drunk after 3 pints and a shot? if so there's no hope for him during 'college' week! :D

This is the most depressing thread....are they really going to kill rag week?

And I heard Jedward are coming too......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

Well 'college' week is still on, and GMIT will still be having a rag week, so all the uni has done really is encourage people to take things off campus, which was the problem to begin with. Lock up your children and animals people!

And encouraged people to do two weeks of rag week instead of one.

Yeah by the looks of it no one is taking any heed of the whole College Week attempt and are going to continue on as if its just a regular RAG week along with celebrating the GMIT RAG week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,239 ✭✭✭KittyeeTrix

So, Do I have this correct???

Gmit is having a regular rag week off-campus as per usual
Nuig is having a college run on campus event but nuig students are also gonna partake in the Gmit week

When are these weeks gonna happen??:)

NUIG's "College Week" is Monday 8th - Thursday 11th March.

GMIT's Rag Week is February 22nd-25th.

    I think...

Its not that this is official student policy, but it seems likely that while all the usual events of the GMIT rag week are on that NUIG students will join in for various reasons of their own. But at the same time the NUIG 'college week' will still encourage people to go out and drink, so it will almost certainly turn into another rag week anyways, although there may be less drinking on campus, depending on uni policy there. But imo this will only encourage more house parties and drinking off campus which was the original problem with rag week to begin with-students causing trouble in the estates and town.

So really the only thing that came from changing the name from RAG Week to College Week was changing the name from RAG Week to College Week?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

As far as I can tell yes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66 ✭✭lopppy

Although most people in NUI will go all out for the gmit rag week (hopefully:D) i'd say the crowd may be diluted somewhat with all the confusion, and lets face it most of us cant afford two rag weeks!

So yeh im spreadin the word that the NUIG rag week (official or not) is startin the 22nd and college week can just be a few nights out after Calvin Harris etc

Not impressed with this whole facebook page though, in last weeks SIN (college paper) they found that the person behind it is a polish man only lookin to make money without any intention on giving to charity....

So any attempts to put the whole thing on campus and keep it outta town have failed now that Calvin Harris and The Coronas are playing town? Im ok with that means more people are in town during the days

when the bouncers at the college bar during rag week are asking for id during the day, are they looking for proof of age or whether I go to college here or not?!

There aren't usually bouncers at the door in the afternoon, although rag week might be difference. What's the problem?

As long as you're a student of the college and it's before 9pm, they have absolutely no reason not to let you in (unless you're hammered)

Calvin bloody Harris?!! Jaysus that's lame.

Why don't the SU get that chick from chemistry and have her dance on a pole that goes up to the ceiling of the AM building. That will keep it on campus.

*Before you read this, know that I am well aware it is because I am past my rag week years that I am giving out so no need for anyone to remind me!*

Is it just me or does the sunny weather bring out the hooliganism in people? I'm well away from Corrib village but can hear the noise this far away (mainly lads shouting for some reason). Drove up there forgetting it was rag week and thinking I could get parking but it's like a caged in zoo with security and lads running around shirtless throwing stuff (again, why shirtless, it's sunny but it's not Tenerife and throwing stuff?). Passed a handful of girls outside the concourse wearing pound shop hats and carrying bottles screaming 'get a life f*****s to two guys changing rubbish bins...I just don't get it..

I'm all for fun, having drinks, messing and having a good time but some things in life I will never truly undertand...and keep your shirts on lads, pale may be in but I don't think we are ready for it..
