Building body mass from scratch.

Ok firstly just want to say that I have very little experience or knowledge of fitness and training and am not a regular on this forum so please excuse if my question seems silly or anything. Basically I want to build body mass and understand that my diet will have to change radically first of all as I don't eat near enough. I am slim by nature but not really skinny or anything so I think I am capable of putting on weight and building muscle with training and diet. The thing is (and this is where my post probably gets stupid) I don't want to put on weight. Well obviously I need to put on weight to turn it into muscle and all, but I don't want to develop a gut from eating more. So what is the answer to this, should I be training constantly to ensure that the exess food I eat is getting burned and turned into mass rather than excess body fat?

Aim for 0.5 pounds a week weight gain.
By years end you will have put on 28 pounds, and half of that should be muscle.

    No.
You should train to put on mass, rest appropriately and worry about getting rid of the fat when you are bigger. You need excess food to get bigger.

Eat loads, lift heavy stuff and then when you are sufficiently bigger, start to loose the fat, through diet and some form of intense activity.
