Firetrap/Access Road Fenced Across

So long story short, the bit of land the family has two access gates, one that leads out onto the forestry access road and another further down that was never really useable due to overgrown furze etc.
Used to be we'd fence our side and Coillte would fence theirs, it's about... 500 metres from gate to gate I guess.

Anyway, long story short, Coillte took down the long fence and replaced it with a small one the near end of our first gate cutting off the access.

Have been told locally that it's always been a right of way, since the land was originally two farms owned by two diff families and they each used their respective gates BUT that if Coilltes actions aren't contested then after x amount of time (anywhee from a year to seven I've been told) then they just get to own the land and dont' have to allow access.

Basically looking for a bit of casual advice before I go ringing Coillte, since obv they'll feed me a line most benifiicial to them.
