Herpes, any advice?

Firstly I am not looking for medical advice or to be judged.

I have had herpes for the last 8 years, am with my boyfriend for the last 4 years and he is very understanding about it, knows there is times when we cannot have sex and that i would never put him at risk.
For the last year approx I have been getting an outbreak every month, around the time of my period. It was originally my GP who diagnosed it and referred me to my local sti clinic. But this clinic is only available one afternoon a week and I work in a different town to my hometown. The clinic say I should not be getting it so often and even though there is nothing to get rid of it they can give me tablets which will stop me getting an outbreak so often, but they have to see it at its worst if you know what i mean and get a proper diagnosis. Which is fair enough but I never know when I'm going to get it, when I do get it and ring and make an appointment by the time that day comes around it's usually nearly gone, It's just so frustrating. I've had this particular outbreak for the last month and it's just not fair on my OH even though he's so understanding.
I suppose I'm wondering if anyone is in the same situation and can advise me as to what to do?

It might be worth telling your GP the issues you are having and seeing if he has an alternative referral? Perhaps another centre or even a hospital close to your work would be better?

Sounds like type of thing that's worth going private and travelling for. If you're in Ireland Dr.Freedman in Dublin is the most reputable guy in the country.

Don't insist on going to your local place. If you had cancer you'd travel anywhere they told you to. Its not life threatening but it sounds pretty awful.

Thanks so much for the replies guys, I'm going to ring my clinic first today and talk to them and if no joy there will go back to my own GP. In the clinic the last time I went they were astounded that I get an outbreak every month, they said when someones had this for a while there tends to be a big gap in how often it flares up, but yet theres nothing they would do. It's just really getting to me now, thanks again for your answers
