I'm upgrading from my bargain basement coffee machine and had my heart set on a Rancilio Silvia. However I was browsing around a shop and spotted a Gaggia Classic for €155. So the question, is the Silvia worth €300 more than the Gaggia? Is the step up in quality that much more? (considering I'm a relative novice)

Is that classic refurbished or brand spankers?

I don't know but based on the shop that was selling it , I'd say brand spank new. Trony is the equivalent of Dixons or Currys. The New Baby Classic beside it was €259

Hard to pass it at 155 tbh.

Go for the Gaggia imo. Have mine 3 years now and still works perfectly.

I've had both and find I get slightly better results with the Rancilio. The Silvia also looks more like a quality machine. However if you can get the Classic that cheap it'd be hard to justify the Silvia instead. Spend the difference on a good grinder instead.

That is a very cheap Classic, though the Silvia is undoubtedly a lot more machine.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll keep an eye for a Silvia but if nothing turns up then I'll pull the trigger on the Gaggia.

    Diarmuid,

As an aside...the link to the Silvia in your post takes you to a website that has very similar content to caffeitalia.ie (the "wood roasted coffee" was the tip off). There happens to be a few recent posts about the bad service of caffeitalia - you might want to be aware!

BTW, I use a Classic and really like it. IMO I can pull a better shot with the Classic, but the Silvia is far better for steaming milk. That's a great price for the Classic (if it's new).

Thanks but other reviews of them are quite positive

Got a nice new shiny Gaggia sitting on the worktop! Last one in the shop! Ready to roll.

Going to have trouble to sleep tonight after all that testing. GVX2 is going to have to be upgraded asap. MC2 I take it is the general consensus?

Yeah the MC2 is a great machine for the money.
