I know Halfrauds come in for a lot of stick regarding competence and knowledge but I have to say they pulled out all the stops for me when I wanted to get my hands on a kids SPiderman bike which was sold out everywhere, just 2 days before Christmas. Manager ends up getting one to the Naas branch in the back of his car for me :-) and I'm just a regular customer with no affiliation.

Sounds fairly typical but I don't know how anybody can still hold any expectation that Halfords staff are knowledgeable in what they sell. Some of them are well into cars/bikes etc. but for others its just a job, and maybe even just a seasonal or part time one - the same as in any retail job. I once worked in a massive off licence and didn't even drink alcohol at the time:p. If you know what you want (and you know that they sell it) what's the point in making an example of someone?

For what it's worth a helpful assistant in my local Halfords insisted that the tail light bulb I needed was 21W in accordance with their guide. I knew that I needed a 4W and that a 21W would be as bright as my brake light. I didn't try to make a dick out him though. I bought a whole selection of bulbs (you can never have too many :)) amounting to £14.00. With my tradecard I paid £2.54! How that's when Halfords are useful :)

Halfords has a place but it should not become the be all & end all of the cycling & motoring fraternity.
It can be very handy sometimes when you are looking for something in a hurry & the LBS doesn't have it or I don't have the patience to wait for CRC:D.

I've bought all sorts of stuff in halfords over the years - engine oil, wiper blades, screen wash, air freshners, car seat covers etc. I mean it IS a car accessory shop after all....

Would ya get the boat! are you a woman by any chance?

Did you try on the ones you bought online? Did you E-mail them and ask?

Im sorry but if your a fully grown male, you should be able to fiugure out what will fit and what wont.

Why do you think you SHOULD be allowed out the back? can you Imagine the amount of knackbags that would love access to the back of a shop so they can sus out the place or fleece it. Sorry but the Shop assistant was right.

Halfords dont give credit notes either, on the bottom of the reciept it says 28 days money back guarantee I think??

Oh Getting yer jocks off in a car parked in a carpark is way dodgier than whipping them on in the shop. Waterproofs, go OVER your clothes(well mine do).

Had never heard of a shock pump before this thread. Granted though, I don't work in a bike shop.

It is very easy to make a mistake with sizing. I bought quite a few jerseys online over the past two months and had to send two back. One of them was an identical size to another I had bought from the same company. It didn't fit while the other did. Both had same measurements on the website.

In fairness, If you had the oppertunity, you can offer it up to your body and judge...

If you try on a overcoat in a shop, you can just whack it on.

The guy was calling a shop assistant a Arsehole for no reason other than being denied acess to a Staff only Area.. In fact I doubt there are any need for changing rooms in Halfords as Id imagine most of their clothing is over-wear. An any Underwear they sell, you cant bring back anyways.

    Yet,

You would spend alot of time on bikes, Know alot of products, possibly can do some basic maintenance, so could be called a enthusiast(?). So could do a decent job in a LBS.

Yet because one young lad doesnt know one thing(which only applies to high end bikes) people are calling him and everybody who works for Halfords idiots.

I have to say I think its the Condascending saddo customers/posters....

I think kona that if you read the post over on epic, the poster was not moaning about the staff not knowing that there was such a thing as a shockpump so much as his attitude and ridiculous suggestions when asked for something he clearly knew nothing about.

Halfords is okay... open Sundays, and thru lunch (why the feck do you still close at lunch here? - I'm originally from the UK)..

...also pricing is clear and consistant.

Young girl I spoke with in Tralee Halfords was super helpful about sat navs and swapped a €2 Hot Wheels car for my nephew with no questions what so ever.

Also their professional tools are guaranteed for life IIRC.. snap a spanner and they will swap it,

They didn't get so big by mistake! They are good at what they do!

Fair enough but he still went ahead and tried and achieved to put the guy down, while being a smug bastard.
The Sales assistant did go further and check online for the guy. I dont think many people who think they know everything would do that.

Too many people go into Halfords with that smug bastard "Im better than the staff and this shop attitude, this place is beneath me but Im only here because I was given vouchers/its sunday/I was desperate...."

Then come onto the internet "oh looky how I was treated in Halfords", seems like a initiation for some gob****es.

In fairness though some threads arnt like this. But most shops will have complaints.

If the guy on epic was such a freaking genius, Dont Halfords have a Idiot-proof layout? I mean they have each section labelled "PUMPS", "TYRES" ,"LIGHTS" etc.... couldnt he ****ing read and figure it out seen as hes soooo much better?

Hey Kona, you must work for them or have a stake in the company.

No.1- im a fully grown man

NO.2-i didnt try on the ones online because i bought the med in halfords and it was to small so i knew i needed the large.(simple)

No.3-i didnt say i should be allowed in the back but if i was, halfors would have made a sale,im not a knackbag and i dont know what kind of person your talking about there but you dont need to see out the back if you want to steal, theres pleanty of stuff in the shop and a big door at the front to get in.assistant could have come in and waited with me but he just said NO.

No.4-it wasnt a credit note it was a refund to my laser card.(sorry)

No.5-i wasnt going to tog off in front of children and familys walking around the shop and it wasnt wet gear it was a winter pants like a tracksuit its not a pullover. If you sell clothes you should have a fitting room, any shop that sells clothes has one maybe two or even three.

No.6-i went to a quiet spot to try it on where nobody could see and hey presto it was to small.

At the end of the day i think his attitude was wrong and there not helpfull in the shop. as i said i wouldnt buy anything there unless i knew what i wanted. i deal with customers everyday and i would and do treat them better than this, id do my best to make the sale.
