The first race for 2010 is coming up on this Saturday 9th in Tymon Park with a 4mile cross country. I predict it being very cold and muddy. :D

It looks like you need to get your membership for the year paid up beforehand though to count for the team events, if anyone else would ever turn up ;) , just wondering if you can actually pay that via their new fancy members website yet or not?

Welcome to the BHAA 2010 season and we are looking forward to another great series of races this year. We would like to inform you of some rule and process changes for the 2010 season, and remind you that the first race is the SDCC Cross Country race in Tymon Park this Saturday 9th Jan at 12.00.

    Declared Sector Teams
Up to now the BHAA committee has placed runners into sector teams, when they have had no chance of forming a team within their company. This system has been difficult to manage since it was unclear to runners who was on their team on a given day, and for committee to limit the size of the teams and predict who would turn up to run for a given sector team.

In order to ensure more clarity is brought to the sector teams area, we will introduce a "declared sector team" for all races this year. The basic idea is that a group of runners, all of whom work for different companies in the same sector, will declare that they will run as a team for the year.

    Company and Sectors
    1. A list of industry sectors will be maintained by the BHAA committee.
    2. Each company will be registered within one sector.
    3. Membership of the team is fixed for the BHAA one year season.

    Company Team
    4. Runners employed by a specific company can only join the company team if one exists.
    5. There is no maximum limit to the number of runners on a company team.

    Sector Team
    6. If a runner cannot form a company team of at least 3 runners, then they are allowed to form a team with a minimum of three members and maximum six members with other runners from the same sector.

    Team Registration
    7. Each team will have a nominated contact person.
    8. By default any runner will NOT be registered with any team by the committee.
    9. It is up to the runner to find their company team or a section team, via the website, forum or at races.
    10. The BHAA committee can recommend to groups of runners that they should form a sector team, but the application must come from the teams.

This do not effect the setup of company teams (runners will be automatically assigned), but we would like to see a person step forward from each company team to act as a liason with the BHAA committee. In the coming days we will contact all runners without a company teams, and outline how they can use this website to identify other runners in their sector.

    Rule Change for 2010
    - The wearing of headphones is forbidden at all BHAA events.
This is to ensure that all runners can hear the instructions from stewards and are fully aware of other runners on the course.

    BHAA Membership Cards
We will start issuing membership cards in February. The card will allow members to access discounts in various shops and services.

We look forward to seeing you all at some stage in 2010,
    Yours in sport,
    The BHAA Committee

This thread is dedicated to the Declared Teams Process
just wondering if you can actually pay that via their new fancy members website yet or not?
. There is a paypal option at the end of the BHAA Membership Form.

I'm definitely planning on doing this but not in a company team, so any others out there to make up a sector team?

One problem is that if this weather doesn't sort itself out, or by some miracle they come round an grit the minor roads, I'll not have anyway of getting out there. Any one know what are the roads like at the moment between the city centre and Tymon Park? I could possibly make my way into the city and then back out again, with a bit of getting off to push at some points.

Depending on how traiing goes this week I might do this race as a tempo run, if I do could give you a lift will depend on how thursday and friday go.

Roads are OK at the moment round Tymon Park. I live near by. I hope to run the route tomorrow just to see what the conditions are like. Will try it around race time and will let you know.

I'd throw my hat in the ring as I'm in this sector with no company but I can't do this week. Too soon after the calf strain. I'd imagine it'll be very dicey underfoot, watch the ankles:eek:

Looks like i might actually have a team from work this year, jsut need to get one more runner.

Ran the race route this morning and as it is on grass it was generally fine for running. However there were a few places that were still frozen and it was especially slippy where the race route crosses over a path or where there was no grass.

With some adjuatments in a number of small places such as moving a little bit onto the pitches (would that be allowed?) and plenty of mats over the tarmac then the usual race route should be fine to race on.

The only other issue then is road access and at the moment this would not be a runner as there has been some snowfall and the roads around are slippy. Hopefully this will change by Saturday.

I'd say road access would be more of a reason to have a race called off, fingers crossed it picks up over the next few days, with lots of snow to met the couse could really change a lot in the next few days.... will the swans be back... :)

The Alsaa race last year was run in similar conditions if I recall correctly.

I don't think I did this one, so does anyone have a google maps link for it (the HQ) ? I can't figure out how to ask the question on bhaa.ie

Although there is a notice in the A/R/T Events forum, some might miss it.

Unfortunately, the BHAA cross-country race scheduled for this Saturday 09/01/2010 has had to be cancelled.

South Dublin County Council has informed us that the race scheduled for Tymon Park on Saturday next 09/01/2010 cannot now go ahead. They had hoped to be able to grit the car parks for Tymon Park and St. Jude's G.A.A. club but, with low stocks of salt etc, the council's priorities have to be the roads. And since the weather forecast indicates no improvement over the coming days, there won't be a thaw that might ease matters.

It is hoped to reschedule this race at a later date if that is possible.

Thanks for that, though you used to be able to post questions etc. on that forum without creating an account, and there's a note on the signup page that says you still can, but it looks like you can't.

Sure. Click on "Signup" on the home page and it's there.
Creating a user account will give you all the benefits of BHAA membership and it will allow you to post comments and submit items as yourself. If you don't have an account, you will only be able to post anonymously. Please note that your email address will never be publicly displayed on this site.
The first sentence should be rewritten I think, as well.

Have decided that i'll give this a bash. Would i get away with a pair of trainers or would footy boots or astro boots be a better option?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 280 ✭✭rdunne

football boots might be better then normal runners , but only just. I would go for an old pair of shoes that you dont mind getting mucky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,864 ✭✭✭✭average_runner

Going to give this a lash, training kinda has not happened due to the weather, but thats the same for everyone. Did get 5 miles in 6 inches of snow last sat though.

Its my first cross country, love the road races so club roped me into this.
Got my new runners for it. Now the big question, should i use 5mm spikes or 12mm on sat?

    Thanks

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

    Definately the longer spikes.

It will be wet this weekend, very wet, but on a dryer cross country you might use something shorter than the 12mm, but I don't think anything as short as 5mm would ever be worthwhile on a cross country course. The 5mm ones are what you'd use for the track.

    Thanks a million.

Didnt know i could these runners on the track too. Will put the 5mm away till then.

    Thanks

What model of shoe do you have?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,864 ✭✭✭✭average_runner

Went ot runways before xmas and asked for cross country runners.

Gave me new balance ones with 5mm spikes. Puchase 12mm too. He said 15mm would never really use.

    Are they ok?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

Here has a bit of an explanation of the differences. Goes from basically a sock* with somewhere to screw in the spikes for sprinters to something more like the kind of sole you'd find on a regular runner with the spike holes for a cross country shoe. Then somewhere in between there are ones for distance running on the track which is what I ended up with.

This page has a few models listed under each discipline, but once it's not sprint shoes I'd say you'll be fine.

Some tip someone else probably passed on via here before I think, was to put a dab of Vaseline on the thread of the spikes before screwing them in to make it easier to get them back out again afterwards.

    * I may possibly be exaggerating the extremes of the differences a little.

Once it doesnt get too cold it should be ok, a nice bit of warm weather and the muck will come back :).
Just hope its doesnt freeze as this course was very hard and frozen last year, tore my calf in the last 10m or the race :(.

You would have no problem with 15mm spikes in Tymon Park. They would definitely be my preference.

Its basically flat. From what i can remember last year there was one steepish downhill part. Its run around the football pitches so theres no real problems but i'd say it'll be very muddy in parts.
