If you really want to be subtle about it you could just pay him some compliments. Just say a few nice things about him. If a girl paid me a few nice compliments I would at least consider the fact that she liked me.

If that doesn't work you can always fall back on the "fancy a roide" line. I mean if you're in any way presentable he will fall for that.
