Is the VW Tiguan any good? Time for a decent sub second hand €30K 4WD (must be) with a hint of class, any other suggestion welcome.

The Tiguan doesn't exactly have class though, it's a Qashqai rival (i.e a mini MPV that's suppsed to look like a little like a jeep) that's based on a Golf.

Don't think anyone will be impressed by it.

OK, lets leave the class issue out of it, as that is a bit subjective. :)

Mainly interested in opinions of practicality, reliability and would the 4WD system by as good as a Freelander?

What will you be using the 4WD for? towing, offroading or just slippy roads?

(it deffo won't be as good as the Freelander system)

Consider a Subaru Legacy boxer diesel, epic reliability, AWD, acres of space, and effortless class.

Would you not consider the Kuga since you are pretty happy with the Focus?

Or a brand new 2.0 TDCi Zetec 4WD costs just over €30k.

Car is for a relative who lives on a hill that requires 4WD in winter, not for towing or off road, looked at the Kuga but tight in the back and boot not great, 2 kids to facilitate.

Nissan X-Trail...huge boot and loads of room in the back. 4WD system is good too.

As long as the relative is ok with manual transmission, I can't think of anything that would beat a Legacy estate.

Giving it the benefit of the doubt, can be no worse than any other VAG - take that fwiw..........no shortage of good/bad stories to choose from.......

As for class - subjective. Personally, I wouldn't call it that it, but that's me.

Size/Space, etc, no bigger than the Kuga, actually.........so maybe you're looking at the wrong size SUV ? Buy a bigger, used, one ?

I think you if you need some space, AWD capability, and 'class', then you should look at the 'lifestyle estates'.........Audi Quattro in A4 or A6 guise, maybe an Allroad. Failing that, there's even the Skoda or Subaru's to contemplate........is there an AWD Volvo estate ?

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
