Yes. The roads aren't anywhere near as bad as the radio tells us.

If you leave early wont the roads be worse??? The more cars over the road the better it will be....

The more cars on the road, the higher the ratio of idiots :D
I'd say rush hour should best be avoided

Drive as usual, most of my route is motorway so that should be ok, as it was today, but the non-motorway part will probably take a while...

Primary roads will be fine. Secondary roads especially in sheltered areas will need to be approached with extreme caution.

Ya i'll be driving to work.....and at work....and most likely will spend the day just like stephens day.....in the 4X4 pulling poor souls outa ditches and central divides!!!

The roads are fine around my area thankfully. The weather has been kind to the mid-west in the last couple of days so I'll be making the usual trek in the morning.

How hard would it be to grit those back roads. was up in kildare last week and nearly went into ditch myself. And was only going at 10k at the time.

I was just talking to a friend in Kells and he says it's attempting to snow there at the moment - so there is more of the white stuff on the way...

Only for my X5 on Thursday morning I wouldn't have been able to get to work at 6.30 - I spent the last few days bringing people to shops because they were afraid to drive their car on the freezing icy roads especially the rear wheel drive - the wheels just keep spinning.

I've been driving around as normal the entire time... roads in my estate are bad, main roads are all clear and I'm 600m from the motorway. Then its motorway nearly all the way to my office.

Anyway, its a company car :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,158 ✭✭✭✭Berty

My new boss is collecting me in the morning so at least I wont be doing the driving.

I might be then going from my current 245 wide tyres to a rental car with 195 tyres.

I was behind a Mercedes Spinter van yesterday and everytime he was struggling to move off once he stopped - might be a help if you had a bit of weight in the back of it and start off in second gear...

I have to agree... you can replace a car but you can't replace a human life!

    Think about it.

Cheers Rod, yeah 1st gear is a waste of time and dangerous, what i normally do in this type of weather is put the heavist part of my load at the back over the rear axle, helps you to stick to the road a bit better

Realistically, theres not a chance in hell of me managing to have a fatal collision on treated roads and motorways between suburban north Kildare and Tallaght. Minor vehicle damage is the worst thats possible; and realistically only if someone else is a tool.

Your over-reactionary response is the only thing "stupid". If roads are treated and you actually know how to drive to the conditions, there is no danger.

edit: in addition, I've just been *on* the road to the motorway / the motorway itself. Its entirely clear of ice.

Yep im driving as the nearest bus stop to me is 8miles away. Shouldn't be too bad once im on main road but i've a 15min journey to do that and roads round my way are lethal still-nearly ended up in a ditch a couple of times today. Not lookin forward to driving it in the dark tomorrow morning!!

Heading to the airport first thing and can't get a taxi firm in Cork to take a booking because of the weather. Might just drive up and leave the car there. Hate leaving car somewhere like that though

I drove from Donegal to Kildare on Saturday - no problems at all.
I'll be leaving early to give myself extra time with all the other clown on the road tomorrow!

    The most recent report

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2010/0103/weather.html

I will be using the Ennis Bypass in the morning. If it rained it wouldn't be so bad because the temperatures are not low enough for it to freeze.

    Hi Guys,

I'm back to work tomorrow and I'll be on the road all day (rep). I'm quite nervous as I haven't driven much over xmas.

    Heres my dilemma...

I'll be covering major and secondary to very minor roads..
If you felt unsafe would you call your boss?
I'm nervous as things are tense at work and if I do call her to say I'm very uneasy driving she'll go off on one. and I'm not looking forward to work as it is without more drama,
    Any advice would be appreciated

How tense will things be when you wreck the company car?

As the driver, the responsibility lies with you, not your boss. If it ain't safe, it ain't safe.

Go and have a looksee and if gets too (d)icey just turn around

Yeah your right, and everything might be grand on the roads so I may not need to worry. Safety first. Thank you.:)

The ground temperature is so low though that the rain will freeze on impact with the surface.

I have been driving from Meath to Dublin 4 (and back) all over the Christmas period. The road conditions have been difficult but the roads have been very quiet. The main cause of problems tomorrow will be created by the drivers and not the conditions.
