Bike advice for a first time big cycle

    Hey!
I've signed up to do a charity cycle from Malin Head to Mizen Head in May. We plan on doing the trek over 4 days covering 150km per day.

The one probem is that I've not much experience of cycling long distance and don't actually have a bike yet! So I need advice on what bike would be most suitable for long distance, bearing in mind that I'm a novice. I want to buy a lower budget entry level bike but I don't know if this would be able for such a big cycle. I'm also thinking that it might make more sense to spend a bit more since I've already committed to training for a big cycle.

    Any recommendations??

I think drop bars (racing style) would be a must for this type of trip. A friend did a similar first long cycle and he swapped out his Spesh Sirrius for a Spesh Tricross sport. He was very pleased.

The drop bars would give you more hand/ back/ neck/ bum positions, which is important.

The Tricross will also take a rack and mudguards which could be useful for the trip and will certainly make the bike more useful in day to day use.

Here's a UK link to the 2010 bike.

The most important purchase you could probably make though are two pairs of decent shorts!

    DFD.

another thing i would consider is that the bike is definately the right size for you or you will have bad aches and pains for your four days . another thing i would consider is going second hand . you will pay a lot less money for a lot more of a bike . but you may have the issue of the right size again . stick up a wanted ad on her or adverts and see what you get .
