Cancelling SKY tv

    Hi,

Just wondering, has anyone cancelled SKY tv recently?

Probably a really stupid question, but here goes anyway: if we cancel our subscription, can the dish and box be used to pick up any channels at all for free? We want to cut down on the amount of TV we watch, but it would be good to know if we can still get a few channels through the hardware which we paid for, and as far as I understand, own.

    Thanks.

    Wayne

Yep, just before Xmas went to cancel...got 20% discount for 12 months (full subscription)...brother in law went to do same and got same offer eventually.

You do get free to view (or free to air...I get them mixed up)...see other posts "FTA" etc

    Hi,

I've just "tuned in" a load of the FTA channels, and I can access them via "services---other channels". So, will still have access to them in that way if I cancel my contract with SKY?

    Thanks for your reply

You'll even have some of them within the standard EPG; it switches to the UK version when you're not subscribed.

Hi waynesurvey,There is a method to check what you will have once you no longer subscribe to Sky.go to 501>Sky News.
Press the red button, let it fully load.
press 8,again let it fully load.
    remove card.
press back-up on remote, again let it fully load.
press back up again(it should give the 'searching for channels message), at this stage You should get what are Free To Air channels in the UK,but FTV in Ireland{FTA has no encryption signal so requires no card once on the UK epg} Free to View is soft scrambled so is not viewable on a non subscribed Irish card.
quite a lot of channels are FTA on the UK epg that are FTV on the Irish epg.until You unsubscribe from Sky the simple way to get the Irish channels back is to unplug the box for a minute,re-insert the Irish card and You will be back to the Irish epg

My parents cancelled the subscription as soon as I (their last son) flew the coup to England back in August. Since then, they've still been able to pick up all of the BBCs (1, 2, 3, 4), UTV, ITVs, C4, etc. I think they get Sky News too. As far as I could see, it's the same as the 'Freeview' channels that I get here in the UK by simply putting an aerial up and attaching it to me TV.

I got rid of sky a few months ago. Best thing I ever did. I was sick of endless repeats of programmes, especally on History and similar channels.

For a month or so had a few basic channels and then one day was tidying up around sky box and accidently removed card. Anyway, discovered that without the catrd inseted in the box I have loads of UK channels which were not available previously!!!

Not sure what the story is but I'm as happy asa pig in muck here...and all for free!!!

    Hi JimmyIreland.

The phone number is on the SKY card. You need to phone them and the wait one month for contract to be terminated.
