Thinking of getting the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS lens for sport. Also, heading to Madison Square Garden to watch a basketball match, will this lens suffice for pictures of the players, dunks etc. with decent quality?

    Cheers

I'm pretty sure the lighting in MSG is ok for that lens. It's really only useful in daylight conditions tbh.

I've had mine for about a year (using it with my 400D) and bought it for sports shooting as well.

Here is one of my shots from the very back of the canal end of croker down the length of the field (cropped) -> http://bit.ly/8wwE5V

It's great and I love the lock switch on it to stop it opening up as I take it out of my bag. Deffo recommended!

You'd be much better off saving for the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. Much better for low light conditions.

Cheers for the responses. Unfortunately it will take some time to save up for the 70-200mm f/2.8.

Why would you recommend a lens thats about 4 times the price of the one he can afford?

Quality of glass, sharpness of images, much better DOF, much better lens for use in low light conditions.

I didn't look at the prices of the lens, just the quality and the intended use.

Besides, you can sometimes pick up a quality 2nd hand lens.

I was about to buy the canon 70-200mm. I went for the Sigma version instead and i love it - excellent lens. my favourite and i own 2 L series lens.

the build quality is amazing and the pictures are class A in my book
canon have a lot to answer for with their charges.

What model was the Sigma lens and was it cheaper than the Canon?

Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II APO EX DG Macro HSM Lens
    it was €560 new
it does not have IS but then Is only gives you two extra stops anyway so just up your shutter by two stops to compensate. having this at 2.8 allows for that.

The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is €329.00 at CDiscount in Dundalk if you happen to live in the north east.

Decided to just go ahead. DO and 70-200 outside the budget.

Thanks for the tips, all, I'll remove the adverts.ie want post now.

BTW in looking for this thread I searched for 70-300 and 75-300 but in both cases it came back "no results".
