Christmas 2009 TV ratings show RTE topping the charts with the highest rated programme being Mattie at 9pm on Christmas day.

Yet I do not know a single person who watched this programme (which the reviewers slated).

Doctor Who,Eastenders/Coronation Street/Fair City, Gavin & Stacey and the 9pm Christmas day showing of the Royle Family are the most viewed programmes amongst friends and work colleagues - Do I know a unique set of people?, is this a Dublin thing ? or are the ratings reported fundamentally flawed ?

The New Years ratings shall be out shortly ? - Jools Holland should be the clear winner but undoubtedly RTE all Ireland talent show will have stunningly high ratings.....

The other aspect about the ratings is you would be led to believe that nobody watched Eastenders until it appeared on RTE which can only lead me to believe that a high proportion of the ratings are based on families in 2/4 channel land and thus the ratings are not worth the paper they are written on.

TV ratings is done by Nielsen.

    http://www.agbnielsen.net/whereweare/dynPage.asp?lang=english&id=324&country=Ireland

The data is compliled from set-top boxes used by their sample. This sample would be representative of the overall population. the ratings are paid for by all subscribing stations so it's not biased towards any particular station.

It's quite possible that you know a unique set of people!

Bear in mind that the ratings are primarily for the advertising community in Ireland.

Even in the UK Jools Holland won't be the most watch NYE TV show.

In relation to EastEnders. In 1992 Coronation Street moved to RTÉ1 and all of a sudden it was being watch far more than when it was on RTÉ2/Network 2. The same goes for EastEnders in 2001. RTE1 gets an audience due to the other Home grown programmes including News and Current Affairs. BBC and UTV had a far large audience in the 1980s and 1990s most of their audience is divided up across the digital channels, so Coro St and East had a good audience on both channels back in the day. (In the republic)

I have looked at both BARB (UK) and TAM Ireland's rating systems and they seem to suggest the same viewing patterns in Multi-channel homes.

RTÉ 1 have and average of 450,000 for TALTS for 15+ (Both the results and the show).

No Thursday top twenty for RTÉ 2 so less than 100,000 viewers.

With only Emmers and Corrie's Thursday night programmes on TV3.

Neither RTE2 OR TV3 had an NYE show.

As for Xmas day, I saw most of Mattie was actually the only thing I watched all xmas day. Don't know why.

I know very few people that watch EastEnders. Also when was Mattie on? If it was on after or before EastEnders/Fair City it would be supported by those viewers plus those like me that happened to turn the TV on at that time and others that wanted to see the show, he had been interviewed on the Late Late Show the Friday before.

Audience never tells you anything about taste. I would agree that Jools Holland should be the most popular but it is possible to alternative for some people

Both BBC 1 and BBC 2 saw increases in audience during the Christmas period. As did TG4. TG4's Sharon Shannon concert had 95,000 viewers or an 8% share (average of 3.3%). BBC 1 had 6.3% share and BBC 2 had 3.3% share. I don't know how they did on NYE but they possibly out did TG4. Gains seen by the Main UK channels were due to losses from TV3.

Possibly although there was a classical music programme on Radio Ireland (before they became Today FM) which infamously got a "zero" figure in the JNLR listnership survey but at the time I knew three people who were regular listeners

"Lies, damned lies and statistics" as they say.................
