I think I'm going to buy a secondhand iphone, just can't afford a new one right now.

I'm going to meet up with someone soon to buy his iphone but from what I gather so far the two best way to check if it's the real thing is by bringing a laptop with me and see if it syncs with itunes and checking the serial no. with the following website

    https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do

Would I be right especially if the phone syncs with itunes?
There's no way a fake one will connect with itunes?

If it so I'll be bringing along my lappie with me and hopefully the guy doesn't try to sell me a fake one or run away with my lappie :)

Bring someone with you. You are being cautious enough already and if he starts to freak out upon seeing your laptop he can **** right off. Where did you organise this? And how much? Fake iphones are a dead giveaway by the ****e resolution and the crappy/different icons(low rez also).

    okay fake one will have:

    will have stylus
    no multitouch screen
    no multitouch keyboard
    will have java app

If you will see atleast one of those things, you wount even need to connect it to laptop bud, just dont forget to take it out from a case!

Lets us know how you will get on bud!

What exactly do you mean by mutitouch screen and multitouch keyboard?

And this clone does not have a stylus.

If you have ever used a real iPhone, you will immediately know it's a fake knockoff. A giveaway is the fluidity and functionality of the user interface, so make sure you turn it on and try it for a moment before money changes hands. Multi-touch is where you can, for example, zoom in and out of websites using two fingers. It's all explained on Apple's website, just click the iPhone tab and go from there.

its true, best way would be to go to some website and look is it multitouch. I think its really best way to find out is it a real iphone - multitouch.

go write an sms and you will find out is it multitouch.

Amd like Matt said: go and play with real one, as it is really unique experience, after 3 mins playing with iphone, you will see a fake from a mile bud!

omg... multitouch screen, it means you can have atleast 2 fingers pushing on screen, and it will work! like pinch zoom in photos and web browser. Multitouch screen is expencive thing, so fake iphones will defenetly wount have it!

He said no man it is iPhone I swear , in his junkie lingo you know how that goes :) I've had iPhones for over a year now and I've never heard multitouch been mentioned once apart from yourself . I know the features your talking about though .

When you see it, go to Settings -> Wallpaper and select one. If you can use your fingers to pinch the photo to zoom in and out, then it's real. Otherwise it's bogus. Bogus phones break after a few months and suck.

Well met up with the guy in a shopping centre with wifi.
First thing i noticed was he had two boxes which I found strange when we were looking for a place to sit down.
Apparently he says the phone is a replacement from o2 of a damaged phone so was in a slim black box with iphone in silver letters.
There was a different serial no. on this box to the original box as he said the phone was replaced not repaired.
He switched the phone on and I couldn't get to the serial no. as the phone was not activated!
I tried connecting to itunes and it saw the phone so that was really only way of confirming that it was real.
He had an o2 sim card and we tried that but my lappie wouldn't connect to the wifi
So I went by the screen (thanks nick_oliveri for that tip) it looked great and by itunes recognizing it.
Got an an o2 sim card and activated it so basically I bought an unactivated 16gb 3g iphone still in plastic covering for €280 which I think was a pretty good deal.
Thanks again for all the advice.

Em tats a good deal for that iPhone, you going to jailbreak it and unlock it ?

Dont know what kind of iphone you have...but it looks a hell of a lot like mine ;).
And icons are almost identical. As previously stated, to the uneducated, it would be hard to tell them apart.

yeah did it, actually surprised how easy it was :)

Real disadvantage of the phone is if you play around with apps the battery goes down very fast.

All in all a fantastic phone and if your like me who can't live without the net an iphone or any smart phone for that matter, are very useful but slightly let down by the battery.
