Refund Question

Hi, my mother bought me a present from Harvey Norman for christmas which I already have so I told her id just return it. I went in today to get my refund and was told I can only get shop credit. Fair enough if my mother was told this at the time of purchase but there is nothing by the tills, on the reciept or on the V.A.T invoice attached the reciept.
I asked to see the manager who told me "thats our policy". I then asked to see there policy/terms and conditions and he said they dont have any in the shop and for me to check the website which I cant find it on either.

Can anyone tell me if im entitled to a refund based on this?

    Thanks

    To be blunt.
    No.

You are not entitled to a refund because you changed your mind.

If the product was faulty you would be entitled to a refund/replacement or repair, which you would get would be at the discretion of the retailer.

They don't have to display these terms because it's the law. Your mother should have asked their policy in advance of purchase and if she was not happy with the policy she could have chosen not to make the purchase.

Caveat emptor - it is up to you (or your mother in this case) to make yourself aware of returns policies when purchasing something from a shop.

As they are not required by law to provide you with a refund simply because you changed your mind, they are quite within their rights to only offer you store credit.

In fact, by law, they don't have to accept a return on the item full stop, if you're returning it due to change of mind.

Sorry JM Marconi but whoopsadaisydoodles is right, some stores would give a refund out of goodwill but thats totally up to the store manager. They dont have to unfortunately.

OP they are correct above regarding your lack of entitlement to a refund.
If the product was faulty you would be entitled to a refund/replacement or repair, which you would get would be at the discretion of the retailer.
People keep saying this even though it is totally wrong. The retailer has no more power to make you take a remedy than the consumer has. It is an equal negotiating process that goes to court if an agreement cannot be reached. This needs to be made clear in flashing lights in the consumer forum.

How is it wrong? You may want a refund/replacement but the retailer is fully entitled to say no and send it for repair. Am I wording it incorrectly, because the basis of it is correct.

Edit: I concede that I am incorrect!

Most shops will offer you a refund as part of their good customer service policy even though they are not obligated to do so. I make a point of supporting these business and maybe the OP and others posters should do the same. Knowing now that Harvey Normans are lacking in customer service I probably wouldn't shop there.

Thanks for all the replies. You think he would have bent the rules for me seeing as there was 4 of the ipod speakers on the reciept and I was returning 1. Oh well.

    Thanks again

IMO It's bad customer service to have a no refund policy but unfortunately they are fully entitled to do so.

Im fed up with bs people who think it is ok to lie and cheat to get their own way thus making shop assistants more suspicious the next time a genuine person with an issue comes in.

Please do not encourage fraud in this forum. Further posts along this line will result in an enforced break from CI.

OP, the store did not have to offer you anything as there is nothing wrong with the goods in question. This is consumer law and does not have to be displayed anywhere in the store in Terms & Conditions.

Then they may change them for the same set again. Please do not take the advice of the above.
