Gym membership

Just received an invoice for the gym for 2010. Don't think I'll renew. Its a fair bit of dosh and I've checked my training log for 2009 and reckon I've used the gym 50 times. That roughly works out as a tenner a visit.

The vast majority of that time I used one piece of apparatus, the treadmill obviously. My gym visits were for the most part fallback options when the weather was miserable etc. If I don't have the membership it might cut back on some of my training time or make it suck it up and train more in lousy conditions. Time will tell.

I'm a bit miffed too that the invoice doesn't give you any credit for being a member for X no. of years, no discount or whatever. I expect if I asked for one I'd probably get 10%, but should you have to ask.

Anyway, does anyone else out there have gym renewal dilemmas?

Im going to wait 2 months until Carlisle drop their prices to rock botton again. They shot up recently as most renewals are around now. Weather is never an issue for me.

I renewed mine in the same gym a few months ago when it was €200. Off there now for the first run off 2010 as I don't fancy tose roads.

I paid 400 for mine up in Liffey Valley. I never use the treadmill though and use the pool and weights alot, when I go, haven't been for two weeks now as I'd either had to cycle or walk up there and neither option is very safe. I use it more during the summer when I don't like running in the hot weather. :pac:

    Depends on price etc.
For example i wouldnt have got little training in the last 2 weeks without it. I find walking in the water a great treat for recovery after long runs.
Also like to do abit of cross training. If i only used it for 10 euro a visit maybe they might sell passes in packs of ten like my gym do. 4 euro a visit is plenty to pay so you shouold be using it 3 times a week for value.
Can a member bring you in for the day on a pass ???
I find the threadmill great for hard runs, fartlek etc.
But VFM is crucial. For those wondering its Value for Money.

A 3 month membership for the winter months. I dont use it much june-sep but is always handy for a shower.

Yep in the same boat. I've been a member for 8 years but the last 2 years I've questioned whether I should renew as my attendence had been shaby. Last year I definiely wasn't going to renew but then it a moment of weakness caved and renewed as I pictured 5-6 visits a week on top of running. I took swimming lessons and went before work a lot of mornings to get some practice in so that upped my number of visits. Reckoned I managed to go maybe 50-60 times but even at that each trip worked out very expensive - €11. Got my renewal and they'd dropped the annual price by €100 but still found it hard to justify it especially if attendence would be patchy.

Decided to give it a miss. Currently on day 2 of non gym member status and already having doubts. :(

Ditched mine last year, still park the car there and it's one of my pit stop options, but didn't miss it - replaced with a treadie this year, which already has 45 miles clocked on by me and about 10 by the OH.

mine is up the end of this month and they have membership at about 150% of what i paid and what they offered in October/November so im hoping it goes back down in Feb after the NY madness. I need it for swimming but i might wait a month if it doesn't go down to the price it normally is

I didn't renew mine in September when it ran out... with the weather at the moment I'm seriously thinking of renewing it though when my student loan comes through.

I stopped my membership about 2 years ago. I actually used it fairly often (lunchtime from work etc.) and it was a good fallback option when the weather was bad (important after pneumonia), but in the end I decided I'd rather keep the money.

As far as running outside in bad conditions is concerned it's mostly a case of HTFU, and there are plenty of options to use your body weight for strength training. I really don't think I missed out on anything, and the extra money sure comes in handy.

I'll keep it up, but will re-evaluate whether I'm getting the value each year. I joined at the NAC a year ago for the pool and haven't even been up to the gym area although this white stuff is making me think I should check it out for my first ever treadmill run.

I might have saved a few quid swimming in Coolmine which is also handy but the public swim times there aren't nearly as flexible and in in the morning at the NAC I generally have a full 50m lane to myself.

Pool only membership in the NAC and you'll save a few quid.

Thanks. I considered it at the time and might switch over in time if I think I'd get to go in the evening. I'm actually an off-peak member instead - cheaper again and gives full rights up to 4PM on weekdays, midday at weekends.

Ìf it wasn't for the access to the pool would probably cancel , not sure about the set up elsewhere but here in Westport you have the "pay as you go " option so on a single visit it might be €6/8 approx but includes gym and pool access , also makes you plan the session to get the most out of it .
As I have invested in winter running clothes/reflectors etc I am going to get the value out of them.

I used to get 3 month memberships but could only go at very specific times- when my daughter was at dance class etc. It was a bit of a waste of money as I ran outside as much as I could. Bought a treadmill and rowing machine for €650 last year and have weights bench in the garage now. I use them very regularly and dont have to worry about childminding as Im at home. Excellent value for money as far as I'm concerned and great when the weather is like this. Would never join the gym again but starting to consider swimming but think it would be a pay as you go thing.

Here's an article from yesterdays IT on this very topic:

I was a member of a gym for 8 years or so. Cancelled my membership back in June. It's going to save me €600 a year, and I've lost about 10lbs since leaving it, so it's a win win for me :D I have a set of free-weights a ab-roller and swissball at home, which only cost about €60 for all three.

Once a week I do pay for a spinning class and use weights. But that's the most time I want to spend there. Yes it's a pain in the arse to venture outside in this weather, and if all comes to all I will pay-as-I-go to use the Dreadmill.

Carlisle membership ended at end of 09. Membership suddenly jumped from 250 to 295 so I decided not to rejoin.

I've bought dumbells from Argos and mat from Lidl so that will keep me going for now. Also running more than ever so won't re-join at any price now.

Not having the gym option in recent days has had the desired effect and made me get off my backside and get out into the elements for a run. Doubtless if I'd resubscribed I'd be cossetted away with my treadmill runs. And while its cold, when theres no rain and wind the outdoors is the place to be.

One of the local gyms had an offer on coming up to christmas of 1 month for €50
Thought this sounded like good value considering the pool and the icy weather
Turns out that I'm not yet getting value for money and might just about get my money's worth out of the pool by the month end
Generally gyms have huge big windows and they tend to see people coming wrt membership
I'll stick to pay as you go on the pool me thinks as I normally go before work and so get the off-peak rate

Just got a call from my Gym was very funny. I canceled last month and they said that they will give me a discount to €49 per month.. wtf...

I was a member of a gym some years ago, and I cancelled my sub. Some time later I was getting txts from them with offers to rejoin. That p***ed me off particularly as the cancelling of the gym sub was a bit of an ordeal. Turns out what they were doing was contrary to data protection. I wasn't a member any more, they shouldn't be using my data in that way. AFAIK the gym had to pay a fine :D

    Hi Guys

I have annual membership (€400.00) with SV Fitness (NCI, IFSC, Dublin 1) which I got just 2 weeks ago, now suddenly i have planned to move to lucan and this membership can only be transferred ( as per Gym policy), I would like to sell this one to some one who is interested. You can enjoy at least 11 more months at a better rate, apparently it is a help to me too but I can offer you 11 months for €300.00 only, if u pay monthly I suppose it is €60 per month so this may be a good saving for you but more importantly, and to be honest, it will help me save my otherwise baddebt money. I am down to 2 days a week at job so money is tight hence this saving will help me...please leave the message here and I will get back to you ASAP. if u wish to take this over. Thanks-Ken
