Bought a new laptop a week ago and Im having problems with the sound when using headphones. Its perfect when I use the laptop speakers but when I am using headphones the background noise is very loud & it is impossible to make out what people in a movie are saying. The only way I have found to fix it is to switch audio device to mono in VLC player. Does anyone know what the story is, I've done loads of searches on google but haven't found anything that works. Any help would be appriciated!!

Do you know which audio driver you are using? I had a similar problem with a realtek AC'97 audio driver. What I did was download the HD driver from their website and installed it instead. It worked for me. Give it a go, might work.

Heres the link, download the HD driver
