Is it true that women look out for ugly men in order to create beautiful children? They say an ugly man and a beautiful woman make a nice baby.

Do ye look out for ugly men?

No, they go for good looking men.

I'm pretty sure this 'rumour' only started as a way for ugly guys to feel good about themselves.

The other day I was hanging around with someone and we were waiting for someone else; when 2 girls (18-20) past by quite close. Though their conversation was quite loud because of background noise, I only really paid attention when I realised they were speaking in English (I'm not in Ireland) so all I picked up was one telling the other that ugly guys are stupid.

I can not say she looked like she was been serious. Perhaps had I got the introduction and follow up to that I might have more context.
She could have been mocking someone else's assertions for all I know.

But it might be relevant to your question.

But, as ever, what if the baby gets her brains and his looks? Is that worth the risk?

Can't say that I do, NO!

Although there was an interesting study done in college before about how men and women chose their partners - women often choose men that bear similarity to their fathers [providing they have a strong father figure in their life], and it was also discovered that women seem to go out with men considered to be less goodlooking than they are themselves - apparently due to a confidence issue or such!

I'd consider my current bf to be better looking than me, so don't know where I stand in that study :P

By the way, very silly poll. All it asks is "Well?" - I mean that's hardly a question for me to answer!!! :S

No but there's one that always stares at me when I'm out.

Have to stop looking in the mirror in the mens room.

Whitney Houston (lovely when off the drugs) and Bobby Brown () have a daughter who, um, takes after her father. Genetics are tricky.

I think most (responsible) women look for stable, responsible men if they want to have children.

Marilyn Monroe suggests to Einstein: What do you say, professor, shouldn't we make a little baby together! What a baby it would be - my looks and your intelligence!

Einstein: I'm afraid, dear lady, it might be the other way around...

    ;)

Can't find a source but I remember reading an article in the paper once regarding it.

I can't imagine that is true at all.

How can someone you love or feel you love be perceived as ugly. A very sad question imo....

Unless of course the op is implying that women dont find love but security....

This article suggests that the attractive woman/less attractive male dynamic isn't about cute kids, it's the fact that women are interested in supportive spouses, and men put a higher premium on looks than women. Interestingly, both parties are happier when the woman is better looking than the man; to grossly oversimplify, she's happy that he listens, he's happy that she's hot(ter).

Personally every time I've gone out solely to procreate I've looked for the ugliest man in the place, being the hottie I am, so I can ensure I won't be wasting my time risking having a munter. That'd be a huge shame, I could never love an ugly baby, nor could I expect it to have any talents - if you're not hot you might as well quit before you start.

Oh how I chortle at the thoughts of actually having an unattractive child - the horror!

'They' are obviously not anyone who knows anything about genetics, sexual selection or evolution. 'They' probably are ugly men, or women going out with ugly men.

It usually boils down to men being attracted by what they see, and women being attracted by what they hear.

I think op has this a bit wrong. its not differing looks that produces pretty kids, its differing genetics. mixed race kids tend to be very good looking as well as having stronger immune systems.

Hence why Brazilians, Colombians and Panamanians (especially Panamanians, good lord) are the hottest people on earth. :D

    /gross generalization

Although to be fair, I grew up in an area with a lot of mixed race kids, and NOT all of them were good looking...

It is interesting that although expanding the gene pool may be optimal biologically, it is often shunned for cultural or social reasons. Another reason to think that what the kids will look like has little to do with decisions about procreation.

I hate the phrase 'ugly' when its employed with either men or women. It implies a serious degree of shallowness and makes me wonder about how little the human race has progressed over the last 200 years. Who gives a ****, really, stop judging everybody on how they look and read a bloody book. Airheads.

Perhaps it was in the Old Wives' Tribune OP?

In reality all people aim for the best they can get, which in the end works out with pretty much everyone getting someone pretty much equal to themselves.

I voted No to the question, do you go for ugly men for beautiful children, not No to do you go for ugly men. TBH I don't be thinking of future children when I'm meeting a guy for the first time!!! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, who I think is good looking, someone else won't think so and vice versa!

Yeah, whatever. Such idle nonsense. I'll mourn the degeneration of the human species in that corner over there if your looking for me.

If I was ever on a random night out, on the pull, and I saw a good-looking guy and a not-so-good-looking guy (looks being subjective, of course) ... Well, no, I can't say I ever chose the not-so-good-looking guy purely on the basis that I would somehow have better-looking kids with him (apart from anything else, I don't know much about genetics, but that makes no sense to me!)

Besides, who goes out specifically looking for the ideal father for their kids? How creepy! And even worse, the idea that you'd be basing this entirely on their looks (or lack thereof.)

This thread is taking the p*ss, yes?

I dont think there are that many obviously ugly people out there. The only features I can see that are ugly are having 10-15 kilos+ of excess body fat, or having a nasty personality.

Stating the obvious but from an evolutionary point of view men apparently favour partners who have good child-bearing characteristics such as wide-hips, youthful looks, etc to give off-spring best chance of survival, whereas women tend to favour strong personality/physicality. Of course each of those are open to perception on an individual basis which makes it all generalised crap.

I disagree, ugly people exist outside of weight and personality.

    Question:
If you're the most beautiful woman on the planet, would you be instinctively drawn to an 'ugly' man because of the attraction of differing genes to your own?

Perhaps in asking "Do ye look out for ugly men?" OP is trying to find out which of you is 'hot'.

It usually boils down to men being attracted by what they see, and women being attracted by what they hear.

Absolutely agree with you. A man like Dara O'Briain for example is very attractive to me. Jude Law, I can see that he's good looking but I just shrug.

What women find attractive is more complex! and what men find attractive is more, em, basic!! and predictable. sorry but it is true! Women find a whole personality attractive. Or, a warm personality can make an ordinary man very desirable. I don't know if this really happens in reverse for men.

Ah, so that's why I can't get a date. It's because all the women are off scouting for ugly men and ignoring my handsome self in the process.

    Yes, I'll stick with that...
