I don't soapbox often, so bear with me on this if you would.

To all ES workers who made this possible last year, give yourselves a big pat on the back.

Some say our job is thankless, and it is because nobody knows who would have lived or died were it not for you... AGS, Fire and Rescue Services, Ambulance personnel, all A&E staff, for playing your part last year.

A special thank you to those who either got a taxi, didn't have "one for the road", or simply kept the speed down.

You'll all never know the devastation you helped to avoid last year in one way or another.

I feel safer whenever I go on the roads now. Its been an amazing achievement, the statistics say it all. Ireland used to have an appaling road death rate for such a developed country. Now its the lowest its ever been, predominantly down to greater enforcement, new technologies etc.

Well, keep up the good work! Who's to say we cant get the lowest road traffic deaths in Europe?

Oh wait, the recruitment freeze, no Garda overtime, aging public ES vehicles...
