Motorway Driving

There is a little bit of a rant over on the C & T forum about motorway driving in Ireland and the Gardaí attitude to enforcement of same.

    Link: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055784117

What do members think about this? We have a motorway in our district but as regular mules we rarely venture out onto it, it's mainly up to the corps. Is this the same for other districts? Is there a lack of enforcement by the corps?

    Thoughts appreciated.

Have a small part of the Motorway in my district as well but its quite far from my station and is covered by another station and we rarely go over there. The motorway is policed by TC but Im not sure how regularly. However we do go on the Motorway for traffic accidents if needed.

Training for policing motorways I think non existant. If you look at the UK training there is specific training for motorways in how you parked the patrol car on a stop or rolling road blocks for traffic restrictions etc etc

The problem we have here in Ireland is that we dont have the same major incidents that has occured in the UK such as multiple vehicle pile-ups involving tens to hundreds of vehicles. Only when something on that level happens will we have some sort of training or guidelines

There is a new safe stopping of vehicle course coming on line at the moment and motorway procedures are being reviewed.

On the policing aspect I think we give plenty attention to the motorway. I do however think regular units seem "afraid" of policing it. Very rearly see regular unit on it.

    Great stuff

In my district the motorway wouldnt be policed very often by the regular unit cos the section of motorway forms a very small part of the district

If people could drive correctly it wouldn't be a problem. You just have to look at the people driving around in the current bad weather to see where the problem lies.

We are telling people not to go out unless absolutly necessary and what do people do? Lets go out for a drive / visit somebody / go shopping. How somebody hasn't died on the roads in the last couple of days is a miracle.
