buy a sound system, the dvd drive will probably still work in 13 months time on it, it most likely wont on the ps3.
Theres a widescale problem with the ps3 drives.

is that something that will be corrected anytime soon?,or is the market just flooded with these dodgy ones?what sort of warranty do you get with the ps3 do you know?

If you get a ps3 get a surround sound with optical in is the way to go.
you can get Sony systems with optical in for feck all, and an opticle cable is 25e.

You can also get sorround sound systems with hdmi INS bit they are expensive.

I have a ps3 for 2 years with no drive problems.

nice one.i suppose the fact that i don't watch many movies or play games as the young lad has an xbox should prolong the lifespan
    thanks again

I still have a fully functional launch date PS3. I have both the PS3 and a sound system and they work very well together. The PS will upscale your DVD's whereas your sound system may not, just something to look out for there!

You have numbers to back that up of course?

..BTW, what consoles, if any, do you own?

PS3 totally deserves an Amp. Most games have fantastic Dobly/DTS sound track, and then there's Blu-Ray movies!

I would recommend getting an amp that can handle (not just pass-thru) True-HD - you should be able to find a decent one for 250-300 euro + what ever you want to spend on 6.1 speakers.

    PS3 -> HDMI to Amp
Old DVD Player -> Optical / Coax to Amp
Old Sky box -> to Amp
Sky HD box -> HDMI to Amp.
Anything else you have -> whatever connection ->to Amp

Now, amp -> HMDI to TV.

Also, there's no need to spend too much money on HDMI cables - you can get them for like €2 or so.

I know of one very good logitech system that has optical in and thats the z5500 but does anyone know of something as good and not as expensive as that? Any links to them? Thinking of getting a sound system but the z5500 is still quite exp.

I don't think they get much cheaper than that tbh.

them Rotels man... am a sucker for brushed aluminium w/ blue leds may one day get that er.. 'lower' end one. looking at 10yr at that price theyre just about run out of audio gimmicks right?! nothing after 'TrueHD' i'd imagine..

am finally noticing the limitations of L+R w/ only 10ft between

if your going with a ps3 the audio formats the amp can decode don't matter to much as the ps3 can decode it it's self.

Even if the tv is new it isn't certain the sound will be good
if you buy a good tv then chances are you'll get a separate sound system so why increase the cost when consumers won't use the tvs speakers.

a receiver with multiple hdmi inputs would be good

There was a bargain alert a few months ago of a guy in cork doing optical cables for €4 a pop delivered I think. I'll see can I find the link !

Here is a newer version of the setup I have, its been good for a year now with no complaints.
    http://www.buy4now.ie/DID/Product/SCPT470EBKPANASONIC%20HOME%20CINEMA%20ALL%20IN%201/17304/258

Try talking them down in price, DID are on commision so that may help.
Try ebay for the same system but it must have optical!

It has an ipod dock, fm tuner, dvds play with upscale, optical in lets your games play in 5.1 sorround sound, and my skybox goes sorround too.
The best thing is the sub, there is nothing better then having the windows shake!

    Good luck.

Got the same system myself just before Christmas from Powercity. They are €280 in the shop but for some reason it is €264 on their site which goes down to €251 after 8pm? Anyways went to the shop (Coolock) mentioned the on-line price and he matched it... oh, and very happy with the system
