With 2010 upon us, and a very good championships year where Irish athletes can have real medal hopes, (world indoors and euro outdoors)

what athletes can suprise us with a jump up in class from national class to international class?

we all know the established international athletes but who is going to go to a new level?

I say maybe the likes of Billy Ryan at loughbourgh with gillicks group, could make the jump

Brian Gregan to get into the mid 45's

Alan O' Brien over 800, 1.46highs 1.47low euro champ qualifier?

    Mark Kenneally 13.20's 5k

Chris Russell and Stephen Colvert to continue there improvements over the 100 maybe one or both can get the standard 10.45?

Ian McDonald 110h to progress to 13.6's

these are just some of the top of my head,

Kelly Proper is another one who is likely to make the jump up to the top table also.

Kelly Proper and Ciara Mageen are two I will be watching out for with a keen interest. Great talent the both of them with a great future ahead of them.

Gregan aswell is somebody who I think will make that jump in 2010.

One guy I'm interested in seeing how far he goes (excuse the pun) is Triple Jumper, Eoin Kelly. Over 15m in '09. We haven't had a world class male Triple Jumper in about a century! He has the tools.

Likewise Kelly Proper. I love to see young talents coming through and making it as seniors. Dave Mac is one such. He's almost there. I'd also like to see the development of some of our new residents, like Seye Ogunlewe. It would be nice to see him joining the likes of Russell and Colvert in an international class group of youngsters that could develop together and push each other.

Hopefully Zoe Brown will progress from '09 and be consistent over 4m and move towards 4.20m outdoors.

Proper has been consistent around 6.50m, particularly in Championships, and hopefully she can take it up a notch into the 6.6x region.

Niamh Whelan to move towards 7.40 indoors, and 11.5x outdoors. Hopefully Ailis McSweeney and Anna Boyle can do the same. Although, I imagine an injury free O'Rourke will be fastest over the 100m flat.

I'm hoping Marian Andrews and Bróna Furlong can push each other again this year, with Andrews tearing chunks from her PB down nearer to the 52.x region and Furlong challenging Carey for Irish No.1 over the hurdles.

If Deirdre Byrne can progress from her last two years under 4.10 and get into some of the fast 1500m races on the continent, she could be dragged into new territory sub 4.07.

Plus all the ones mentioned in above posts...

+1. We don't exactly have a tremendous recent record in the TJ and PV, so any young talents coming through are welcome. :)

Hopefully, this will be the year we can have a PV'er over 5m :o

Im interested to see how Colvert progresses, certainly has a lot of scope for improvement. Seen a couple of his races on youtube and also in the flesh and his start is atrocious! Could do with hitting the weights as well. He definitely is in with a shout of going below 10.4

I think she looks most likely to take a step up. No better year than a European Champs year to do it too. It would be good for the sport here to have a female field athlete at the top level, backing up the exposure Eileen O'Keefe got a couple of years ago.

I think it's a massive year for David Gillick to. Not exactly 'one to watch out for' considering his outdoor season in '09 but I think the Euro Champs in Barcelona are a MASSIVE event for him. He has a genuine chance of taking the gold.

Distance wise, I hope Thomas Chamney focuses on the 1500 this year. After his 3.37 debut last summer, it looks like the event to suit him better.

I would have to say that Chamney is better over 800m for the time being anyway. If he can stay injury free through the winter he could possibely challange Matthiews national record.

I would have completely agreed with you this time last year but after running 3.37 on his first real crack at it last summer and then looking more than capable of competing in his 1500 heat in Berlin, I changed my opinion. I now think he's more likely to run a low 3.34 than a low 1.44.

If he ran either time of course, it would be great!

The middle distance scene is certainly looking pretty strogn at the moment. Obviously on the womens scene we have Ciara Mageean, world class for her age and definitely has the potnetial to go all the way.

It was really good to see some top class domestic rivalry with Chamney and Campbell's battle for the Worlds spot over 800 last year. Then at junior level Mark Patterson made the European Juniors final in the 800. Both Darren McBrearty and Paul Robinson ran 1.50 and Robinson als has a 3.46 to his name. Add Quinn into the mix its lookign very promsing.

All four of them are juniors next year!

I think Sean Connolly can go up another couple of levels thie track season after the cross country season he had.
His long term future(and i know people say this about most distance guys)
    is the marathon.
He has the junior record i think for Raheny 5miles.
    His range is fantastic from 1000m in 2.22 indoors an a 4.02 mile indoors,8.02 3k 13.50 5k an 29.37 10k
On the road 49.13 from Ballycotton last year.
I expect him to knock a big chunk of his 5k and 10k times.

Mark Kenneally looking for a top six finish at the European 10,000 metre championships in the summer according to his interview with rte sport on the news tonight. He's finding workouts difficult in the snow but he is maintaining the volume which will maintain his fitness levels while also doing some old school strenght training rocky style.

Anybody know if Eileen O'Keeffe has recovered from her injury problems and training this winter ? she was looking good before her injury problems prior to Beijing.
