Eclipse - New Years Eve 7.20pm

Is it possible to shoot an eclipse assuming the sky was clear. I just saw in the paper that there is an eclipse tonight (New years Eve) between 6 & 8pm with 7.23pm being the best time.

    Any suggestions. I have a tripod, Canon 1000D & the 18-55mm & 55-250mm lens.

    Thanks

Did you have any luck?? The sky was all cloudy here and I couldn't see a thing!

    Yes
I recommend that you switch to manual, start by setting the ISO to 400, the f-stop to f11 and exp time to 1/200. Check your histogram to see that you have not over exposed.

If your camera allows it, I would set the timer and use mirror lock.
    Here is my result:

    Best of Luck

(I have some tutorials on my site about exposure)

Had a look at the poor results at
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055783608
given above. Although these files are 107K, there is little detail.
The main reason for this would be poor optics, however, be wary of opening the lens to maximum aperature, as this will also give results that are less sharp.

Well hello Andrew - didn't know you frequented these spots!

Nice shots of the moon - expect to see some of them Monday night?:)

Poor optics? 500mm f4L ftw ;) Oh yeah I don't have mine on the thread but it's on pix.ie

    Ken
The poor optics that I was referring to were "sigma 70-300mm that i bought for €70", but I was trying to be a bit more subtle.
I too use the 500 F4 and find it pretty good.
Hope to get the 800 when the recession ends!

Ah gotcha. The 800mm isn't too bad. The 500mm is mainly going to be for the cricket matches I cover. I can stick on the 1.4x extender because it's mainly daylight shooting with the cricket.

I'll be the one with the eclipse photo in the B&W section (novice) that'll get a 5 for effort :)
