Tuned to same ch, and have lost all four channels! North Cork - think its just a Cork problem

All four gone here in Laois. TG4 went first then the other three about an hour later. I think the signal usually comes from mount leinster and are all analogue channels

    RTE 1 - Ch 7
    RTE 2 - Ch 10
    TV3 - Ch 62
    TG4 - Ch 59

I scanned for the digital channels with my DTT USB stick and they are all gone too.

TV3 and TG4 definately aren't Mount Leinster anyway.

I still have DTT although the analogue ones are gone.

both gone for me in meath at the moment...normally pick them up from kippure as far as i'm aware. rte 1 and 2 still working fine from 3 rock.

yep everything gone from Mullaghanish - vhf fm radio & vhf & uhf tv. No tv from Knockmoyle (S. Mish, Tralee) either, which i presume is relaying from Mullaghanish, but have radio kerry from Knockmoyle.

gone for nearly 2 hours now, probably not doing work as weather is so bad...

    Mullaghanish site is off completley.

    All services affected.

TV, Radio, Mobile, & Broadband etc.

    Could be a busy day!

RTE analogue(VHF) missing sth Wicklow. TV3 TG4 Mt Leinster ok.
Possibly coincidence lost mobile coverage on O2 for a lot of evening?

    Happy 2010 everyone:)

Kippure is off the air - I remember the fire at the Kippure site a few years ago had a huge knock on effect on all the relays - possibly the same effect this time ??

yeah, my two stations from Kippure are gone off air.
Nothing on RTE.ie or rtenl.ie websites. would it be too hard to put a message up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 175 ✭✭amovingstatue

i thought all the relay sites had backup feeds arranged for the channels from satellite receivers in case the terrestrial network went down. I remember in the past for rte1 the output from a sky digibox with an error message displayed was transmitted from mullaghanish when a fault occurred. Given that there is power at Knockmoyle since Radio Kerry is transmitting, I guess this has to be manually switched over - maybe the way to remotely control the site is unavailable as well?

There has been a massive snow blizzard up at kippure all day today and yesterday-probably metres and metres of snow.
Winds could be well above storm force.
I don't know whether the station is manned there or not but it would be difficult to get to untill the weather clears and I'd imagine only by helicopter at this stage.

    It's probably similar at mullaghanish.

    That would explain the outages.
We were [in our madness up on the military road tonight and that was a total blizzard and impassable.
We also noticed the telephone cables were weighted down with the snow.
I would imagine a high site like kippure would have lost ESB electricity if thats what it uses in the snow storm up there.

I presume they have an Esb power supply? or what do they use?

ESB with a diesel generator backup.

Kippure uses ESB with a UPS and diesel backup. I speculate that the generator probably failed to start when the ESB was lost. Kippure also handles a lot of the microwave links, so when it goes down, other transmitters may loose their raw feed. However there should also be redundancy within the system to route feeds from other sites.

Just checked now and the DTT from Kippure is back up and running. One would presume that analogue is back too.

tv3 back in meath, but tg4 is still gone!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 874 ✭✭✭More Music

The loss of Kippure had nothing to do with Mullaghanish. Mullaghanish has backup sources if the primary microwave link fails.

It was major power fault on site which caused further damage to equipment. This may also be the case on other sites which explains why some channels are back and some aren't.

    Mullaghanish was restored around 2:30am.

BTW, it was tough out there last night. Access to sites was extremely difficult which meant 4x4's had to be abondoned and repair equipment carried on foot.

    RTENL engineers deserve credit.

Still no tg4 and it's the second of Jan.
No news on rte.ie;rtenl.ie; or tg4.ie
Guys in rtenl told me over the phone that they wouldn't put any news up on the website as a fault is so rare it's not worth doing. I asked why it wasn't automatically done, - no answer

2 things. I want to give thanks to the RTÉNL engineers who bothered their arses and went beyond the call of duty on a **** night like that. Well done lads.

The other thing; what happened to putting up service updates on aertel page 169?

Just lost all DTT and Tv3 analogue here in North Kerry

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 502 ✭✭✭Finne1993

Just to add my bit in here, TV3 from Kippure is intermittant at the minute and TG4 is still off air, where I am I get my RTE 1/2 from the Greenore relay and they're working fine but TG4 is off air there as well. Bit strange this as that would tell you the Greenore relay gets their RTE's from Three Rock and their TG4 from Kippure!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,235 ✭✭✭lucernarian

Would the Greenore relay not be able to see Clermont Carn anyway? I thought LOS to CC only disappeared when you go into Carlingford.

No, travelling on the main Dundalk to Greenore road you lose it coming past Rockmarshall, it comes back into view for about for about a mile through a gap in the mountains at Riverstown and from around the Bush onwards its gone unless you head up the mountain towards Glenmore but there is Def no line of sight from Greenore. The only way a lot in this area can get TV3 is from Three Rock/Kippure with Kippure having the strongest signal. I read before somewhere (Think it was here on boards) that the feed for the Greenore relay came from Three Rock, which is why I thought it was strange that TG4 is out here also but the RTE's are unaffected. Maybe with so many others around the country reporting similar problems there might be some other unreported failure in the RTENL system.

Understand that TG4 tx'er is still down, kippure is under 10 foot of snow with drifts higher than that even. Work being attempted on it again today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 820 ✭✭✭SRB

Wondered why I'd been getting a watchable analogue TG4 signal for the first time in years over the last few days, having just read the thread I realise it's the Belfast TX I'm now getting. Haven't really looked at the analogue channels since the DTT power increase at Kippure a few weeks back.

In relation to the kippure transmitter I spoke to a local TV shop owner who is friends with a guy in RTE and he says that RTE Network (RTENL) have not been able to get to the transmitter to fix the problem due to the snow on the mountain and can't give a date when it will be fixed.
It seemed to go out on the 24 December - I am sure anyone paying for advertising on TG4 couldn't be too happy at this point.

For people who are haveing problems - I have added the table and Map below to help them to hepl them identify which is their local transmitter and what the Analouge broadcast frequencies of RTE1, RTE2, TV3 and TG4 are:

From Saturday's Irish Times - Air Corps helicopter lifted a repair crew to the RTÉ mast at Kippure in the Wicklow Mountains.
Defence Forces to take more active role
    TIM O'BRIEN

    Sat, Jan 09, 2010

ARMY: THE DEFENCE Forces are set to take a more active role in assisting to clear ice and snow and provide emergency transport.

Troops and vehicles were deployed in counties Kildare, Wexford and Galway yesterday and an air ambulance was used for emergency medical transport.

Liaison officers have been appointed to a number of emergency relief co-ordination centres.

A spokesman said that since Minister for Defence Willie O’Dea announced the Defence Forces were available on Thursday, the air ambulance had made six missions in 48 hours. The normal yearly average was 75 missions.

Most of the air ambulance missions involved bringing neonatal patients from Carlow, Wexford, Kerry, Cork and Cavan to hospital in Dublin. A heart patient was transported from Cork.

Yesterday afternoon an Air Corps helicopter lifted a repair crew to the RTÉ mast at Kippure in the Wicklow Mountains. The spokesman said the Defence Forces had a role in assisting in the protection of vital infrastructure, which would include the State’s broadcast facilities.
