Best laugh I've had in ages, prisoners granted an amnesty for the papal visit in 1979 were not actually released until after the pope had left the country.
The reason given was that otherwise they might rob the houses left empty by people visiting papal events.
    From RTE
The files also reveal details of an amnesty for 76 prisoners who were released to mark the Papal visit.

Jack Lynch's government agreed with official advice that the prisoners should not be let out until the Pope had left the country - otherwise there would be a threat of robbery to all the homes left empty by people attending the Papal masses.

If they were a such a risk for re-offending then what were they doing being released early rather than at the end of their sentence?

The released prisoners may be the people who eventually became out current Government. Profile certainly fits.

Just when I thought I couldn't get another example of Goverment incompetance and the ludicrous influence of the Church in this country I hear this. It is like something from Monty Python, only worse.

Does anyone seriously need another reason for the separation of Church and State ?

    Because the government are idiots

    Religious people are also idiots.
Look at all the people released in America just because they claim to have found God.
I found the ****er the other day. I'm still going to be punished for not having a tv licence though.
