    Hey,

Was wondering if your going to drive over to England via Hollyhead do you need your Irish passport or is your license enough?

I was over during the summer. We didn't need any ID at all. We did however go from Larne to Cairnryan (i.e. northern ireland to scotland) but we're from Carlow. It may well be a little different going from the south.

Just a passport in my experience. I don`t think they can ask for a driving licence until you are out on the public roads.

ID should be sufficient although I'd bring my passport just to be sure.

Ireland and UK is part of the Free Travel Area (by right you should need a passport to fly only).

Its called the Common Travel Area and passports are not necessary for UK or Irish Citizens. However Ryanair insist on passports for all. Other airlines accept Driving Licences.

I make the trip back to Wales through Holyhead quite a bit to see my family, never been asked for any sort of ID, only times i am asked is when i travel as a foot passenger.

If you plan on making a few trips then you MUST join Irish Ferries Frequent Travellers scheme, it's free to join and info on there website.

An average return journey with car and 2 peeps is €270, with the Frequent Traveller scheme after you have made 3 return trips you can claim 20% back as Irish Ferries credit, that's gonna be at least €150. :D:D

I have a UK passport and go over there a couple of times a year, usually from Rosslare taking the car on Irish Ferries. I book online and have never had to produce passport or ID on that route in either direction.

I've used Dublin to Holyhead a couple of times and had to produce my passport once disembarking in Dublin.

So you could be asked for ID.

You need yer license to drive, that is all. Do you think everyone shopping In Newry brings their passport?

There's no border control between Wales and England any way ;)

Would you need to bring an Insurance cert for the car and also would you have to let your insurers know you were bringing the car to England for the weekend?

    It depends on the insurer.
FBD allow unlimited driving in the EEA without telling them, most other companies are much more restrictive than this.

You've an insurance disk, that'll tell them almost as much as the cert - how would the cops in england know if the cert was a fake or not?

As your bringing your car there will be plenty of room for all your documents.

Bring Insurance, licence and passport. I never took my VLC etc never had the need to show it. But that would never stop me from taking stuff just in case. Remember though to take all your documents out of the car each night.

No harm call only takes 5 minutes but check your policy you should be covered so it shouldn't cost you money. It better to tell them as it gives them less reason to squirm out of any claim.
