Strong wind and heavy rain, and the thought of very mucky trails made it an easy decision to skip a run this morning. No harm to have a rest day every so often

Havent had a problem getting out so far this week, today looks horrible outside but I guess i'll be getting strange looks in work when I head out at lunch. Once the wind isnt too bad I dont mind the rain.

Being off work, I'm finding it harder to get motivated to get out for a run. Don't usually mind the rain but I'm using it as an excuse right now.

Got out the last 3 days but today looks distinctly nasty....sounds as if it's gonna get worse too. That said I will get out today at some stage, prob not as far as I'd like though

I'm the opposite about running when off work - i'm liking the chance to run in daylight during the week. Running in good weather is easy, its days like these that count.

Weather in Limerick is the best that it has been in about ten days. Strong winds yesterday and black ice for a week before that.

It's days like this that reinforce why I bought a treadie - about to attempt my first interval session on it - only a handy one with the race on Sunday - so 6 x 1/4 mile @ 6min pace coming up.

worst thing about having lots of windows in the office is you see and hear the crap weather, was hoping for a break in the weather to run, but doesnt look like that will happen.....time to go now

my younger brother has volunteered to go with me for a run so I've run out of excuses....I will be using him as a human shield against the wind ;)

enjoy the runs those that go.

Managed only 30 mins today :( , weather sucks here nearly blown off my feet a few times.

I'm the opposite - I found it much easier to go out in the wind and rain of the last few days rather than try and find some solid, stable ground during the icy patch for the last week. I actually enjoyed splashing through the mucky puddles today - but I'm now dreading having to get my kit out of the car for the necessary scrub down!

I've been very lazy lately, haven't run since Sunday. Between a crazy thick fog on Monday afternoon (~20m visibility at most), family friends visiting that night, and the last 2 days of nothing but strong winds and rain I just haven't managed to get out. I feel like I'm turning into a huge fat blimp here :(

Not ran in over a week, feels like it's been years.
Going to head to Rosses point at low tide tomorrow to get a bit of time in then, can't plan anything for the roads at the moment especially out west..

Just in from a run. That was tough. Cut it to a short 3m as the wind was too strong my leg was at me.

Meant to be doing 11m tonight, ahem. It's blowing a gale out there. I went out last night and as I was running into a serious head wind I wondered if there's really any good to be taken from running in really heavy winds (never mind the rain). I mean, if you're being blown to a standstill are you really benefitting from this physiologically ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,441 ✭✭✭Slogger Jogger

I agree. Some days you are better off kicking the proverbial heels up. I was itching to run today but looking out the window its like the Father Ted scene when he is looking out at the hurricane blowing. There'd be no fun in that. I'd probably still run but for running the last 7 days. And the treadmill is conveniently blocked in behind the Chrismas tree, so no fallback available :)

I have 15 miles down on my schedule for tonight. After missing most of last week I really wanted to get that done but I doubt I'll manage that much tonight. I still plan to get out for a few miles though.

I got out for 13.35 miles, the longest run I have ever done in my entire life. What a ridiculous day to pick to do so. Freezing cold, horrific winds, non stop rain and unavoidable puddles everywhere. After 6 miles I just stayed in the area's that were sheltered as much as possible.

Took me ages to heat up after this run. Its probably not worth it! What was I thinking!!

I had planned a 10 mile run - to be done any day over the past 3 and aborted after 3 miles - I do not mind the rain either but do not believe one gets any benefit from running into such strong winds and it seems as though the icy conditions will get worse. Missing a few days or even a weeks training pales in comparison to the time you will miss if you incur an injury. Given how cold one's body is running at the moment - even after a number of miles!, the odds of breaking a bone if you slip and fall increase. This is Ireland - temperatures will rise again before very long.

It's all resistance- if you can battle against the strong winds you get a great workout. Akin to running uphill, or tying a tyre to yourself while running in sand.

Is it like running up hill though ? Would you get your heart rate up at all battling into a headwind. It might be more like the resistance training of pulling a tire but I see that as more strength training rather than cardiovascular. I'm not saying it's pointless (as half your run will be with a tail wind), I'm just wondering if the gains are really worth the effort. At what stage does the weather have to deteriorate where your just putting yourself through a load of hardship for only a moderate net gain ?

Can't answer for heartrate, as I know nothing about it, but going uphill gives a resistance from gravity, thats what I meant. Think of last years Howth race, and battling that wind at the summit- the stronger runners could run into the wind better.

Are you just trying to wuss out of tonights run?:p (says the man who hasn't spent the past month doing marathons on Everest:o)

Ice and slippery conditions are dangerous to run on and should be avoided if possible. Rain, Hail, sleet, chill winds, etc should not result in no running unless the wind is something like 70km per hour, then my friends keep away from it at all costs.
However if it is just cold wet windy and miserable with wet ground this is a different matter. Those who are mentally willing to get out regardless of the weather are those who will be battling it out at the top end of a race.( If one has access to a threadmill then this apparatus should be used) It is up to the individual whether or not they want to run and are prepared to endure. Hardship and suffering are words asociated with the closing stages of a race, they should not be asociated with easy long runs. These runs are about durability and hunger.
There is little point saying you should do this and you should do that. This is all about what the individual wants to achieve in athletics. No excuses need to be made as it is only you the athlete who is effected. Nobody will think less of an athlete if they neglect a run due to weather. As long as the athlete goes to bed that night satisfied with their decision, this is the most important factor.

If you can motivate yourself to get out on days like today, it makes getting out on every other day seem easy by comparison. It was tough going today, but still run'able. I did envy all those people with their own treddies though. Lucky bar-stewards.

Just back from the track. Great craic.

First time ever I could feel the freezing rain hit my eye balls. Which was weird.

Got blown off the track on 5 of the reps. Was laughing by the end of the session.

The laugh has turned to dismay now as I can find neither my meat.... or the two veg :(. Indeed an idea just popped into my head to sit on the edge of the couch and dip them into a cup of warm water. Hope the neighbours dont look in the window.

Yesterday I contemplated contacting the OCI about an entry to the Winter Olympics following an attempt at a run which turned into a 15 mile speed skating spin.
    An last but not least...
Perhaps the changing climate and colder winters could see us excel and win medals at the winter games and we could have an irish version of cool runnings. Not sure why but I'd like to see:
    1) Miley from Glenroe captain the team in the irish version of the film - he had it off with Fidelma so would be on for a bit of craic with the ladies around the olympic village. Plus he spent his life driving tractors so he can steer the bobsleigh
    2) Duncan Stewart to fix anything that goes wrong with the bobsleigh, also has his own hard helmet so could save costs as he has some of the safety equipment already
    3) Dougal Maguire for comedy value. The options here would be endless
    4) last but not least: Ann Doyle the sexy minx. Her in lycra.... grrr.

    surely worthy of an oscar

    Good ...fricking .....Jesus.

I only had a 3 mile run scheduled for tonight...but bloody hell it was one of the hardest runs I've ever done ... give me an LSR any day of the week!!

Of course there is benefit in running on a day like yeasterday. Running into the wind is very good for building up strength and if its an easy run that you arer after then you can simply run at a slower pace than you would in good conditions.

In the past twelve months there wasn't a single day when heavy winds would have preventedyou from running on their own, although 17th and 29th of January were close calls.

Given I had the beginnings of a cold I gave it a miss and stayed in bed longer than the hour power nap that I'd planned. Turned out to be a good decision, still feel a bit crappy but about a thousand times better than yesterday, if I'd gone out last night I'd most likely be floored today. Hope to get about 10 done today and another 10-13 tomorrow.
